Penelope, since I can't see the thread of our talk from this point in the website, are you aware that I am near Sun Valley, in Hailey actually? What I wanted to do with the basil was transplant good seedlings into a 5-gallon plastic nursery container. I did that in
my Taos container-garden and the basil got as big as sagebrushes. And they could be moved indoors at frost time. When I first moved to the valley, my big epiphany about gardening in zone 4 @ 6500 ft. came when I attended a meeting at Pam Ritzau's house on a snowy winter night and saw 4-5 five-gallon pots of fully productive tomato plants
that had been moved indoors to carry on! It made me empathize with how cats feel about catnip ...
Your laments were really interesting. I lived near Fairfield for 18 years, out on the flat, and had a heck of a time growing things. Cabbage, potatoes, beets, lettuce, onions, carrots and peas did quite well. I had lots of green tomatoes and something always got the basil, either bugs or frost.
I'm over here in Pocatello now; we're at 4800 feet -- just those few feet make a big difference. I have grapes and apple trees, things that would not thrive on the prairie.
Hi, Edie,
I'm starting a group for NM gardeners, since there are several of us now. I hope you'll join. On the "groups" page, find "kitchen gardeners of New Mexico" and join in. Please let any other NM gardeners that you come across know about the group. Thanks, Heather
