Grew up in rural ireland and have lived in the US for 18 years, 10 years in CA. I love the climate here and I can garden year round. For a living I design, instal and maintain Kitchen Gardens. Soil , composting and vermiculture are very important in the way I garden.
Hi John,
If you would like to see those formal gardens on a truly grand scale then there are quite a few chateaux in France that will give you that chance:
Chateau de Villandry in the Loire Valley
Palais de Versailles in Versailles, Paris,
or near me there is Les jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac where I recently spent a blissful day wandering in the gardens.
I've found a link to a plan of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles which I thought might interest you
http://www.chateauversailles.fr/fr/le-chateau/0157-plan-du-domaine.html (sorry it's in french)
and also a web site for the best french gardens organisation
http://www.lesplusbeauxjardinsdefrance.com/en/index.htm
Sorry, you'll have to cut and paste as I have never found out how to embed a link!!!
What's the title of the book on smaller gardens? - that sounds more up my street as well.

Hi John, ands welcome to Kitchen Gardeners. I only joined a few weeks ago and am loving the site.I'm getting so much wonderful advice.
I notice your dream garden destination - what a superb choice. I live in France but in the south west about 250 miles from Villandry, It is truly magnificent and if you get the chance you must realise your dream and visit there.

It took me a good while to find it, too...

What you do for a living is my dream job! How long have you been doing it? How'd you get started? I'd love to hear more.
