Profile

Where do you live and garden?
Auckland, New Zealand
How long have you been growing food?
4-10 years
About Me:
My old villa now supports a mixture of Traditional and NZ native style gardens...and a wonderful kitchen garden.. includes a large diversity of food. I will upload photos to show the range and how successful the transformation has been over 9 months.
I have planted in mostly raised beds, with untreated timber. This helps with soil fertility( Problem with clay), keeps a slightly higher temp than surrounding soil and easier to reach!
I Auckland we have fairly temperate climate...hot and sometimes wet summer, moderate winters and usually rain.

Winter is upon us in new Zealand-June 08

Well winter has finally cast its net over Auckland. We have had alot of rain, with some wonderful crisp fine days. Today for example was around 16Deg Celsius with an overnight of 6 Deg. Now the Vege garden is doing ok...not the beautiful view I had a few months ago. I have Parsnip, Brocoli, Kale, Lettuce underway for winter dinners. I have been pleased with my sheltered garden as it is not vunerable to frost............so far. I’m planning to plant a lot of garlic this weekend. Also I think I ma… Continue

Feb 2008

Well we have noticed it's much cooler at night. Still very dry during the day, but a patch of wet weather has been welcome. Some parts of NZ very dry and the farms are looking parched. We have netted our massive grape vine ( as we did the Elderberries before) to prevent loss of fruit. Harvesting tomatoes for chutney and sauces, Dwarf beans in profusion, Zuchinis the size of a car, luscious strawberries, pesto from fresh basil, capsicums, etc.. We have an issue with White butterfly that attacks b… Continue

Summer is passing.. Jan 2008

All of the hard work over the last 9 months is paying off and we have had some superb produce.......many meals from my own labour.
You will see from my photos the area of the Vege garden I have planted. This was somewhat of a waste land between my house and the rented flat of the neighbours.
It has beautified the area and is now very productive.

There was an article in the local paper recently about the Kitchen garden trend in New Zealand. The local nurseries have reported… Continue

Maribeth,
Many thanks for your comments.
Your right in that the climate is pretty good apart from a few months of winter.
In the 60's New Zealand was given the title of the 'Quarter acre paradise'. It was a slightly tongue-in-cheek book basically saying we were not worldly but all had the dream of a house with the quarter acre section. Well times have moved on and most of those sections have been cut up and don't have as much space. Kiwis are a bunch of very keen gardeners though even in a postage stamp garden. Our spend on garden gear is very high per capita I believe.
My goal is to get more people growing their fruit and vege!

David,
I spent a lovely vacation visiting friends in Auckland and was so impressed by their neighbors and how effectively they used their compact backyards to grow lots of food. It seems like a good place for gardening, and for being outdoors in general!
What a beautiful Burmese soaking up the sunshine!
Cheers,
Maribeth
