Here's the description from the website: This unique growing outdoor billboard by Leo Burnett, which promotes McDonald’s health-conscious menu items, just won a Gold at New York Festivals’ Innovative Advertising Awards.
The garden billboard was erected a few months ago with green lettuce planted to form the words “fresh salads.” The creative team worked closely with a horticulturist/landscape architect to have the lettuce start with 1½-inch spouts and grow into lush leaves over time. Watch the garden billboard grow in the above video.
Yeah, but what's being accomplished? Make Mcdonald's executives richer because the billboard is alive? How much water is wasted keeping it going? Should food be advertising itself?
Read Gloria Steinem's SEX, LIES AND ADVERTISING (an article available on the Internet) , and two books: Jerry Mander's FOUR ARGUMENTS FOR THE ELIMINATION OF TELEVISION and Neil Postman's AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH.
What I find interesting is that yes, there are people in many parts of the world who would climb that billboard to get to the food available on it. But they (mcd's) won't have any problem with that here. No one needs the lettuce that badly. The places that really need the food don't have mcdonalds, so the lettuce ad is safe.
Oh, they'd just have to pick it and let it sit in a cooler in little plastic bowls for a couple of weeks, then all would be as expected. Of course they'd have to add a couple "tomatoes" and something resembling a carrot shred :)
