I'm looking for Community Gardens, community gardeners, and how things are going out there. I'm thinking of moving to the city. In our looking for houses, I've realized that it's REALLY hard to find good growing plots in the city; mostly due to light considerations.
Given the lack on most potential living places, it would seem that community gardens should be a growing trend. Anyone want to report in with what they know, maybe create a list for KGI readers?
Its a little out of the way from the "city" but if you're in Northwest Virginia, Blandy Farms in Clarke County (also known as the State Arboretum) is giving away community plots for people to garden.
Dear Zic,
Communities and their activists spawn community gardens. So so much is going to depend on if there is an established system (as in Cincinnati) or a nascent system as in Lexington KY. I would try and find out the system that exists in the city you want to move too. Note that if you have to build from scratch its hard work, not to mention cat herding and stone soup making, skills you will have to acquire.
Alternatives would be Churches (green sanctuaries) or sharecropping with neighbours.
Check out Civic garden centre in Cincinnati for information of the NGA community gardening website.

Hi John, Yes you are right, for anyone who wants a pea patch of their own.
But my goal goes beyond that, it's creating a resource list of existing community gardens for KGI. You suggestions are the ways to either locate or start a community garden, which would, hopefully, get added to my list.
