I've looked around for those Marie Antoinette melons that you asked about and not found a single reference to them. In my own yard, I like a variety called Sugar Nut, but it is a hybrid from the company Seminis. I am still looking for a reliable-yet-tasty heirloom melon that will do well in my yard. Sorry for not being able to help!
Your pictures and your blog are exquisite! Thank you so much for sharing. I wish someone like you lived nearer where I am so we could share this passion called gardening.
I do admire the bees much as you do. I am fearful, though, of all that I hear of the disasters befalling them, and the smaller and smaller numbers of bees being born. This is a terrifying concept!
I am on almost an acre with enough wooded area to put hive - I have a huge old tree that is loaded with ivy and at the end of summer it is loaded with honey bees, I am always amazed how many bees there are that visit the flowers on the ivy. I think he would be pretty safe. So far so good.

Thanks so much for the link Everett- I will have to check it out!

PS, I wonder if I kept one hive if it would be a bother to my husband who is allergic to bee bites and carries an epipen?

The four directions, the four elements, there are a lot of symbolism to four... :)
It's pretty!
From Wiki:
"The traditional kitchen garden, also known as a potager, is a seasonally used space separate from the rest of the residential garden - the ornamental plants and lawn areas. Most vegetable gardens are still miniature versions of old family farm plots, but the kitchen garden is different not only in its history, but also its design.
The kitchen garden may be a landscape feature that can be the central feature of an ornamental, all-season landscape, but can be little more than a humble vegetable plot. It is a source of herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers, but it is also a structured garden space, a design based on repetitive geometric patterns."
I understand now! I'm a bit more chaotic than that ;)

That's a real nice garden, Everett. Quite a challenge to grow things in that zone. Is there a symbolic significance to the way you laid out the herb/flower garden?
Everett, am in Conway. Love the longer growing season, as a matter of fact I garden year round. I cover the beds when we expect frost. Three years ago I went to Grenada and got these seeds from my SIL. The summer that I grew them I saved some seeds which never germinated. I have been trying to get some since then. In the Caribbean community they are called seasoning peppers. They are full of flavor, with no heat and are great to add to salads or soups. I will remember to share some seeds with you if I ever get a hold of some. I have not grown "Fish" peppers. Do you grow them? Last year a friend gave me an African "bird" pepper plant. I am hoping the seeds I saved will grow.
Your pictures are great to look at and I love looking at what others are growing.
Everett, wonderful pictures of the Potager! Bravo to you and the gardens.
For a moment, I truly thought I was looking at a garden in Europe. You've really captured the "continental" feel. I look forward to seeing more pictures and following your blog posts. ~Happy 2009~!!

Hi Everett,
Your photos are great. Congratulations on winning that award! I am jealous of the little bunny in your garden (I think). I had one of those giant horned worm things in my garden this year, too, but no praying mantises. Again, jealous :)
Happy gardening!

Hi Everett! Welcome to KGI. What an interesting background you have. You're a great addition to our website. Folks here are wonderful, with varied backgrounds and gardening skills. I hope you will take the time to look through member pages, and read some of the blogs and forum discussions. I think you will really enjoy what you find.
Are you having success in beekeeping? My father kept bees when I was a child. I am anxious to be raising bees myself, but cannot afford it right now. I hope I will b able to in the coming year.
Have fun on this site Everett. I look forward to seeing you around. And Happy Holidays!
Hi Maya
Maybe you could contact Jude and Michel Fanton they started a Seedsavers group and seed bank many years ago. They have a great book on Seed saving they have written and they tour many countries helping people set up seeds banks and gardens.…
Hi Everett
I found this article on Mycorrhizal Fungii which i think is quite interesting. I am sure the production of this stuff is one of the benefits of the "hugelkultur pile" that you describe.
I know on the TV gardening programmes they advocate…

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date.
There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…
