Hi Ian, Thanks for the warm welcome. It's still chilly here in the Boston area, but I have plenty of vegetable, perrenials, and herb plants growing. I was able to purchase 8 large hanging pots of flowers that were dried out for only $1.00 each at Lowes. That made my day. No it made several days happy. The flowers are beautiful already.
Thanks Ian! I've been gardening off & on for years but this is the first time I started seedlings inside. I actually hated leaving them for a few days, will see how they're doing when I get home tomorrow. I think I was just worried that if it didn't rain & we had a few sunny days that they might fry!
Duncan is in the Upstate of SC, but I know Charleston very well. Photography is another hobby of mine, therefore I have spent a great deal of time in Charleston. Did you enjoy your visit there? Bergerac is very nice.
I was able to find rhubarb plants locally yesterday and put them in the ground last evening.
Thanks, Ian! It looks like a great site with a great bunch of folks - I've enjoyed the little browsing through the varied topics that I've done so far and look forward to spending more down time here!

Hi Ian, Thank you for your response. I have lived in the States for 4 years now, but am originally from Marseille. I enjoy gardening and look forward to sharing ideas!
Leave it to me to respond before I read your blog...Ian, you have my envy. Moving to France is a dream of mine for another lifetime, I fear. After visiting there when our younger son was an exchange student for a year I fell in love. We visited the farmers market in Aix en Provence and walked around with our mouths hanging open, over both the variety of foods and the freshness. While, for an American, it was kind of odd to see, we also marveled at the vendor who had live chickens and butchered them there for his customers. I'm sure the freshness of those cooked birds is something I will never tasted here in the states. Although I just joined a food co-op and we have a source for several kinds of resonably fresh meats, chickens included. I'm getting my order of grass-fed organic beef this week and am so excited. Chickens will come next.
Nice to meet you. I look forward to learning for you and everyone here.
I planted asparagus last year and was worried it wouldn't come back, but it has. I guess we're supposed to wait 3 years before picking it. I'd planted it before, but on the other side of my backyard and it never returned. I think now that it was my neighbor's obsession with pesticides. Those people have moved, but the house always seems to attract "neat freaks" -- unorganic ones.
I'm working on a batch of handwoven tea towels in bright colors -- random color warp. I haven't been very dilligent, getting the end of the semester wound up. Final exams Tuesday and Thursday, then I prepare my syllabus for my summer class that begins next Monday. Looks like I'll be teaching as long as the university lets me . . . I knew some sort of financial crisis would hit about the time I reached this age . . . I just hope social security holds out so I'm not completely destitute in old age.
Hi, I just read through your blog entries for this past week or so. I really enjoyed them. Your soup sounds delicious, as does your trip to the market. Our farmer's market has begun here, but people are only selling plants and whirlygigs and goofy cutouts of people bending over in the garden, not my style. But I've been planting. Peas, radishes, lettuce, beets and carrots are all up and growing. I've had neighborhood cats digging things up, however, a great annoyance. If we weren't so spoiled here, the cat and squirrel population would diminish significantly, or people would keep their pets under better control. I've been eating spinach that reseeded itself and grew under the snow. It's beginning to go to seed now, so I'll allow a plant or two to reseed and keep it going. It's a variety I'd never grown before called Trooper; the seeds are surrounded by sharp little spikes. I read that Thomas Jefferson planted a spikey-seeded variety. Night temperatures are beginning to warm a bit, so I set out two eggplants yesterday as a "test". Today I think I will dig out front by the street and get some summer squash seeds into the ground. I love spring.
Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought
of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.
Hi Sumitra,
It is great to see your photos and bee hives.
Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet.
If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing.

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...
Greetings everyone :D
Sice we've been having such odd weather this year, I decided to try getting my garlic in the ground this past weekend. Now I hope that it'll all grow nicely.
Donald you lucky to live in an area where you can start a new hive at any time during the year! In New York one could never start a new package in December! =8-o
We'd love to see pix of your current hive. :)
Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...
Hi Everyone: I am new to kitchen gardeners and I currently have one bee hive and I am planning on buying one four pound package of bees and a queen in December. If my luck is strong I will also capture a swarm and end up with three total hives goi...
