my garden is doing well, thanks for asking and I'm finally all settled into my new house. The yard is small and really just a little to big to not need a lawn mower. I would love to dig up the grass and turn it all into veggie garden. But it's a rental..
I like your profile pic! I have that one myself.. =)
My family raised beef and pork for personal consumption when I was young. We named some of them, but they still went into the freezer. Lulu was John's when I married him. He and his previous wife adopted her believing she was one of those little potbellied pigs that wouldn't get very big. We've had her on a diet for a year, but she's still about 150 lbs. easy. Wouldn't think of having her butchered. No sir. But she's about 7 now. I don't know how long pigs live naturally, and we don't know what we're going to do with her when she does die. No! No bacon or ham! A decent burial if we can find a back hoe to dig the hole and lift her!
LAUGHING MY A** OFF!!!!!!! You are such a hoot! Even John is laughing!!!!! Even the dog would laugh if he could hear!!! My comments wall came back a short time ago. I don't know where they went (except maybe Dairy Queen for a Blizzard), but I'm glad they're back. Thanks for the laugh. You are definitely an original!
Hi there. I know you left a comment for me this morning, but for some reason, none of my comments are showing today. They've all vanished! I've left a note for Ian. I hope he can figure it out and fix it for me. Thanks for your note, whatever it said! Enjoy your weekend.
Haven't been on much. I've been outside gardening! I bought tons of veggie plants and have been a planting fool. Plus, I'm working on some new planting beds. I try to spend as much time as possible outside! :) ~Rev. Claudia
Hi Guy! Haven't heard much from ya lately. Busy? Up to your ears in corn? Deer? Bee Balm? I like the slow slide show on your pic id. When are you going to post pics of your garden? Tell mama I said hi.
My, oh- my! The profile pics change weekly! Well, that keeps it interesting! guess I'm a bit boring... not much changes on mine.. don't want to upset the apple cart... what's working is working!
So, what is the status of your garden? Give me some hope?
Oh... I'd die for a real good SEEDED TASTY watermelon!! All we get in the stores here are those nasty seedless thin rine things! My mother made watermelon pickles from the ones we got as kids... oh, they were so good!!!
There's nothing like sitting on the back porch and spitting seeds!
Knee is getting better... each day is a step forward! Yeah!
Nope... not as much as we need... maybe tomorrow. Hey that profile photo... you the chick on the right or the left??? Gosh guy... you be looking pretty good...Guess the watermelon patch is a success!!!
I've been draggin' my heels on planting the maters and eggplant. I did put some in tonight... but we are drier that a pop corn... U know whut! We need rain and are supposed to get it over the next few days... I decided to split my options and put some tomatoes in and keep the rest snug in the greenhouse... just in case these drown!!!
Got a photo of Mr. Deer... little prong horn bugger!
Ed, I come from a mixed background. I'm not only southern, I'm Cherokee Indian (all on my dad's side). It's my mom's side that mixes everything up. She's Irish, raised in England. There's a lot of European influence in everything my family ever did. Dad's pretty old school, but he doesn't go by the almanac. He works a garden by what he knows from his own experience. I know he uses nature's signs too, but he doesn't talk about those signs. He just goes out and does what he knows he's supposed to, when he's supposed to.
Dad's people were sharecroppers in the 1920s-50s. Spent his time working cotton and tobacco fields. So did my poor mother after she married him in '48. They left that hard life when Dad went back into the Army and made it a career.
Dad shares his knowledge with me. He tells me what to do, but he doesn't relate it to "when" in relation to seasons and moons and such. I'd love to work my garden that way. But I can never find a copy of the current almanac while it's still in print. They're always sold out. So I'm learning to read many of the signs myself. I think that's one of the reasons why my garden is doing so well this year.
Ok, you're going to have to explain "corn moon." Wait! If this is good, I encourage you to turn it into a blog and post it for everyone to see.
John tilled the lower garden the other day, and today we laid down manure and tilled it in really well. We'll plant our corn, beans, and squash there this year. First time growing corn in the 5 years we've been together. I'm really pleased with the garden this year. It's going much better than in previous years.
Those corn moon's might be safe, but watch your back on those dog day dawns.
Thanks.. I'm working on it! I at least got my squash planted yesterday... that felt good! If I can avoid surgery, then I will be thrilled. This restriction of movement has been very hard for me to put up with! I hope I am gaining ground! As long as i can keep Mr. Deer out of the garden,, I think I will be pretty happy! I discovered he had visited my pea... can't see where he snacked and I am taking steps to spook him out.
That was my first trip to pick up mulch after I finished the truck. If you notice, I overloaded it just a tad. Live and learn. It only looks and drives like a tank, it has its limits.
Ah, thanks! My little buddy has been lonely.. I have not had time to "water" him! Tonight I did set up the sprinkler, and perhaps he dropped in for a bath.. I was busy and did not happen to see if he did. The chipmunks are tickled pink that I was out and about today... they were chirping at me!
The knee is feeling better... guess it's the drugs! Yeah for pharmaceuticals!
Sorry I didn't see this sooner (I thought I would get alerts). We are still picking eggplants - in fact they will feature in an appetizer for Thanksgiving...
Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year?
I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...
Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought
of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.
Hi Sumitra,
It is great to see your photos and bee hives.
Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet.
If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing.

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot
especially at this time of year when the seed catalogues start arriving. The Pond family lived
on a seven acre homestead of sorts in Westford Massachuset...
I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

How's the weather in your part of the world?
Does the new picture mean you've become a Clemson fan?

Tomatos are beautiful so far in Maryland this year so I am expecting a good harvest in them. Just hope the ground hogs leave my beans alone.
