Update
The older rocket and kale have finished flowering and the seed pods are filling nicely. The curly endive has started. Such a treat to go outside and find blue flowers! I'd never seen them flower before. Aphids tried to attack the kale seed heads but the lady bugs took care of that - and they are so voracious that I never felt the need to spray. There were lady bugs all over my baby blood orange as well but I couldn't see what they were after. The blood orange has flowered and I've pulled off all the baby oranges. The tree is just too small for them yet. That was a job that smelled wonderful!
We did have some very dry weeks there so I started putting the washing machine water on the trees. The soil under all of them is looking very poor so I've bought a big bale of straw to mulch them all. The trees themselves seem ok, they've got enough water and fertiliser, it's just the look of the soil. I use tap water on my veges but I feel just fine putting the grey water on the trees.
We did have some really nasty hot days, it topped 40 deg C in my yard and even the shade cloth wouldn't help the plants. Everything wilted for a while - plants, critters and humans.
I only have a day and a half this weekend, I have to work this afternoon, so maybe all I'll manage is the mulching.

Comment by Gillian on November 9, 2009 at 5:02pm - Gosh, you guys are getting very hot weather! we have been having lovely rain lately, and everything is turning green :) Of course the humidity is getting up there as well! Jay, we grow snow peas here as a winter crop, that might be why they didnt come up - too hot. What does the wild rocket taste like Maggie? I got regular rocket seeds but they went wild! my hubby doesnt like the taste though and I heard there is a milder variety.

Hi Jay,
It is good to hear all about your garden. This heat is severe and as you have said everything wilts.
Here in South Australia we are going to have a very hot week ahead, 37c and 39c every day.
We have not planted out our tomatoes, basil etc because it will be too hot.
I am wondering if we should just garden in winter when we have lovely rain.
It is great to have homegrown veggies and herbs. Have you tried growing wild rocket, it is great!
