The Dog Days of Summer
The squashes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, potatoes, okra, herbs... all have lept up! The peas, well, they are ending now. Trying Luffa Gourd for the first time this year. It is thrilled with the warmth, having been practically hibernating for months.
Ants are everywhere. Plans I had for clearing paths, and pulling some weedy areas will have to wait till the weather cools. I am careful not to disturb their nests if I can help it. I have a deal with them, you know. They can harvest from their aphid farms and I'll plant gardens just for that as long as they stay away from my edibles. They can have their patio highways, eat all they want from the compost pile and I won't disturb the pile. Just stay out of the house, and at least 6 clicks from the perimeter of the building. If the perimeter is breached, all deals are void. Such was the case the other day when I found some on the diningroom floor, wandering aimlessly. Using Orange Guard, I sprayed the edges and terminated the scouts with my fingertips. I felt some remorse, just not enough to give them the run of my domicile.
I saw my first honeybee today. I realize it wasn't THE first honeybee to visit my insectory garden, but it was the first time I noticed a honeybee. Just lovin' on the Swamp Milkweed, it was.
I managed to "allow" (aka, lazy) Spanish Needles to go to seed last year. Now I am blessed with hundreds, if not thousands, of seedlings, not yet flowering, that have to be plucked. I'm not against weeds, per se, just that these plants really do have needles for seeds. Long, black things that get stuck in clothes and poke really hard. Did I mention they're REALLY hard to get out?
Time to go tend the foliar flock now.
