I Need a Break
To get my mind off things for a moment, I started going through some pictures that I had taken last summer and I came across this one,
of my garden taken in July of last summer. When you have been looking at nothing but black, white and gray colors outside for the last few months, it was nice to be reminded of how green the summers are here in Maine.
This was my favorite place to take a break all last summer. I could spend hours out there on my hands and knees, pulling weeds or watering or sometimes just walking around. Often times, I would just pull up a chair and sit. Have you ever been on vacation and gone to a lake or the ocean or perhaps the mountains just to get away from it all for a week or two? As you sit there taking in the scenery, you can feel all your stress and troubles just melting away. That is the feeling I would get just sitting next to my garden.
I miss that. I suppose I could pull up a chair and sit outside now, but with a high temperature in the teens predicted for today, I just don't think it would be all that relaxing. I do enjoy the four seasons but, you never really hear anyone say in the middle of summer "I can't wait for winter." But, after finding the pictures of my garden this morning, my first thought was "I can't wait for summer, or at least spring."
I had so much fun growing food last year that I plan on at least doubling the size of my garden this year. I had some stuff that didn't work out too well that I want to try again like carrots and onions. I also grew things that I wish I had grown a lot more of like summer squash, cucumbers and potatos. There are also some things that I didn't grow last year that I want to try this year such as zucchini, cabbage, and some different herbs beyond the basil and parsley that I grew last year.
My plan is to keep a sort of keep weekly journal here with a photograph taken from the same spot every week so people can follow along (and offer suggestions) if they like. But, that is a ways off. Here is what my garden looked like this morning:
But at least I have my pictures from last summer if I need a break.
