As We Pass Summer Solstice...
I did notice that in the time I was gone, the garden "jumped up & danced" as the phrase goes. Growth has gone full tilt, especially the peas & herbs.
It's been pretty cool here in these coastal pineland climes, wet too. I can't complain though. Just about every place I was at in SoCal has some sign up about the severe drought they're going through, and water conservation. During my time living there, There was a period of almost 2 years once, when we had no rain, not even a mist or morning dew. So these days I greet the morning rain, afternoon rain and night rain, with appreciation. There are many areas in this country who aren't so lucky. The Corn, Tomatoes, Eggplant, Tomatillos, Cucumber, Melon & Peppers, well, they're a little unhappy. That's ok, they'll manage & so will we. The alternative is far worse.
Monarch & Black Swallowtail babies have been born, eaten their fill, through with evolutions, and are in their chrysalises, giving the Milkweed & Lovage time to recoup for the next arrivals. Shisho has finally decided it likes it locale and Coriander is bringing in all kinds of pollintors for the tomatoes. Mitsuba, a new addition to the scape this year, is settling in nicely next to the Valerian. I found the Mitsuba growing in the strangest of places, in a wooded place. Someone told me there is a native species here. Who knew?
