Kitchen Gardeners

In our area the 1st of November is considered as a dead line for planting. After that time germination is effected as 10% daily. So I checked my list of vegetables that I am intended to plant.First batch of reddish is ready to consume, I have planted all three batches and they are growing well.Peas ,spinach,fennugeri,white-radish,turnips,fennel ,oregano, thyme lettuce in two colors, cabbage in two colors, broccoli, iceberg, beet root tomato, celery, popy, basil and garlic all are growing well.At our farm we have finished harvesting rice and have planted potatoes.Cotton is also picked only the stalks with a few last buds are present there. So we are now free growers with no deadline to follow, except some weeding ,watering and fertilizing.
My husband went for fishing to Sutluj river.I went in my kitchen garden it was cloudy and it was 1st of November.Time out no more sowing.I picked what I can i;e fenugeri, some spinach, radish, peas and a hand full of ripe lemons and some figs.I cut the figs pierce them and tied them to dry .Made a big glass of lemonade for myself, and put the squeezed lemons in the pickle. Then I cooked Samber with my vegetables.Good start for free days.

Thanx Everett! fenugri is very beneficial and easy to grow ,you can eat its leaves cooked with other vegetable. Its seeds are very useful .They are used in pickles, many dishes and masala mixes. We grow rice in flooded fields.Although our area is not totally suitable for cultivating rice,as it is somewhat drier. If we move four hundred kilometers to north we will find the best places for basmati rice in the world. You can google these areas they are Kamonki, and Gujranwala. Here in our area we cultivate rice by planting their nursery. And then we transplant this nursery to the flooded fields and all.I will upload some pics of our rice fields.

Hi Saba! We just sow wheat on the rice fields with out ploughing ,them ,with drill. This year we are planting sahar a late variety. As compared to planting potatoes, harvesting rice and picking cotton it seems a child's play .No labor is required except a driver. So I didn't mention it.Are you planting strawberries this year?I am Didn't get the nursery due to war in swat .So I left the idea behind.

I like the blog Amna. I'll have to google fenugeri to see what it is. I just finished reading "One Straw
Revolution" by Masanobu Fukuoka. He wrote about growing rice in a field instead of a flooded
paddy. I understan that the Mhong people of Laos also grow their rice in dry fields. How do you
in Pakistan grow it? Enjoy your time out.

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
