shelly Can we as individuals can help build a "nurture" economy?

The point of this project is to get more individuals involved in supporting entrepreneurship, small business, local community and local food systems. WE can rebuild the economy ourselves, if we start voting with our wallets to support businesses/projects with values that align with ours. If you agree, please learn more & pledge here: http://FriendsOfSlowMoney.com My take on why this project is so importan… Continue

shelly Top 6 Ways to Identify & Avoid Genetically Modified (GMO) Foods

Recent polls across the world have consistently shown that, if they had a choice, 90% of people would actively seek to avoid GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in their food. Unfortunately, GMOs are taking over our farmland so quickly, it is virtually impossible to avoid eating GM foods... unless you… Continue

Joy Williams Food, Inc.

This summer a new movie is coming out, in the tradition of Michael Pollan, and Alice Waters.... The movie is called Food, Inc. and it's about the condition of our food. We are facing a tremendous amount of obesity, heart problems and diabetes in this country, to say nothing of cancer and heart problems, and I really do believe that the reason for this is what we are eating! And it starts in the schools. Now all of us have taken a great step in the right direction by planting our own gard… Continue

Natalie Lawson What's Fo' Suppa'? Change Yo' Name?

Have you ever experienced a thought so funny that it tickled your funny bone the whole day? In my experience, those things that make me giggle the most are completely lost to others around me. There was a new Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Sapa, near our home in Phoenix, AZ that my husband and I wanted to try out. I had driven by it on numerous occasions without paying much attention. This time, as we pulled into the parking lot and as I saw the name in large letters across the front of the buildin… Continue

But I have never tasted meat, nor cabbage, nor corn, nor beans, nor fluid food on half as sweet as that first mess of greens. - James T. Michelle W. Flannery CHICKEN AND NOODLES

I love to discover new recipes, read old cookbooks, search the web for unique food combinations, and, as inconspicuously as possible, tear recipes from waiting-room magazines. I also love building a new recipe from scratch or recreating an old one. It stimulates the cooking side of my imagination to make substitutions, or make new combinations of flavor and texture. I love the challenge of working with what I have to create an attractive, tasty meal, or compensate when I don't have what a recipe… Continue

Cooking Up A Story Director's Journal: Organic Foods: Backyard Agriculture

Director's Journal It’s no easy task being a farmer. What makes it even more challenging these days is to find affordable land in the first place. I hear frequent stories along these lines from those just starting out, and, from those who have been farming for awhile. The veteran farmers shake their heads and say something has to change if we’re going to rely on getting our food locally… Continue

Heather Wood A fertile time

There's a wonderful freshness about my garden right now; it's lush and green and producing like crazy, and the maladies of fierce heat and tall weeds haven't set in yet. Perfect! It's a healthy young child of a garden, and the inevitable adolescence to come is easily forgotten. For me, this is the Year of the Potato. Potatoes aren't supposed to grow well in our area, because our alkaline soil reduces yields and gives them scab. Since plants can be contrary, potatoes have decided to flourish in m… Continue

David King A General Gardening Bibliography

These are not textbooks – there will be no ‘required reading’ from them – but they are books most gardeners will find extremely helpful over the years. I recommend you put them on your shelf as they will answer most of your questions and give you new windows of opportunity for you and your garden. The books that follow are general garden books – usually each subject we will cover in class will have its own specific list of references. Do not feel obligated to buy each book, but if you are intere… Continue

Ian Dangerous thing when you start thinking

I have been quite ill over the past couple of weeks suffering from Vertigo. I don’t know what caused it although it now appears that it may have been a simple ear infection and more importantly I didn’t realise what it was. Many of my friends across the Internet have sympathised with me and my various ailments as I tried to pin down exactly what the problem was. I knew I was being sick, constantly and I knew I was getting dizzy, sometimes falling over as a result and I made all sorts of perfect… Continue

Heather Wood random musings on nutrition

My medical journals are full of the news that the low-fat dietary guidelines promoted heavily by the USDA (and, unfortunately, several medical organizations) for the last 25 or so years actually did more harm than good, and contributed to the current epidemics of obesity and diabetes. No surprise to anyone who actually tried them out. When I was an undergraduate I had a nutrition professor who evangelized about the life-prolonging possibilities of a nearly fat-free diet, and added that we would… Continue

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
