Rose the chicken update: It's been about three weeks since we started the antibiotics and she seems to be doing great!! Although I'm not a big fan of drugs...I'm glad I decided to do it. She is well on her way to full recovery!

I agree Clarence..I'll read the package again and see if I missed anything.

I am not believing that Massed produced feed is always laced with antibiotic as that stuff adds cost to making the feed.... I am more worried that when I buy antibiotic feed that the maker may skimp on how much antibiotic there really is in the fe...

tetracycline powder...it's what the feed store had. I'm going to treat the whole flock.

I found two of my books, that is the good news. The bad news is I have yet to find anything that seems to be of any help. I will keep digging. What antibiotic are you going with?
September 28
Clarence...I found the antibiotic!! I'm going to treat the whole flock since Rose gets really upset when we isolate her!! Thanks for the encouragement and ideas. I'll post again in a few days with health update. Thanks again!

Thanks Clarence, I really appreciate you!

I think everything is going to be okay....

I arrived home from work yesterday and most of the garden was laying flat on the ground.
I knew it was going to be hot...at 8am I could already feel the heat from the sun penetrating my blue jeans.
I watered well the night before, so I felt confident that things would be fine...
I knew that there was trouble, when I returned to my car and couldn't touch the steering wheel because of the heat.

The temp gauge in the backyard read 100 degrees.

I've been watching my garden and the August decline h… Continue

Things my father taught me...

The measurement of my finger from the tip to the first joint is 1 inch...depth for planting peas.
The measurement to the second joint is 2 inches...depth for corn.
Return borrowed things in better shape than when you borrowed them.
There are two types of trouble...one is the trouble you knowingly walk into, the other is trouble that just happens...it's important to know the difference.
Walk softly but carry a big stick.
if you have to use said stick, make sure who you use it on, doesn't get up.… Continue

Jasmine

I love my garden.
I try to spend as much time as I can out among the plants.
I feel as much joy in the cheerfully flowering calendula as I do the drop dead gorgeous tree peonies.
But there are three plants in my garden that will take my breath away, every year, without fail.
The stand of dark purple Lilacs growing on the front slope. Their just opening flower buds compel me every year to bury my face in them and breath that great lilac smell. I am sure, from the way they look and smell, that the… Continue

And then the sky broke...

Heavy, hot and oppressive.
Everything feels as though there is some celestial thumb, pressing us down into the soil.
The sky is a strange mix of blue, grey, white and black.
Tornato weather....but not here. We don't get to pull that trigger....
Instead we wait, sizzling in the heat like a popcorn kernal in oil.
Pressure building, heat increasing, anticipation something you can feel on your forehead.
Until the first fat drops of rain fall.
The clouds so heavy with any and all evaporated moisture… Continue

Hi there Sandra. Haven't seen you around much this summer (on KGI). I've missed your "bubbly" contributions. You're staying busy I suppose. My garden, and food processing have kept me very busy, along with other responsibilities. I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a slower pace come fall, though I will still be gardening and processing what I grow. I hope your days are blessed, and full of joy!

I was born in Everett and grew up on an acreage at Lake Stevens, north of Seattle. What is "weird" about your weather this year? Here in southern Idaho, it's been weird too. It's rained every day for a month, broke records, very peculiar for this high desert.

Hi Sandra,
yes I have always been put off by the idea of having a bin of wriggling worms and rotten food - and so many people say put it under the sink! I think you either love vermitcomposting or hate it! The idea of burying it underground and letting it sort itself out really appeals to me. I am still trying to find a supply of red wrigglers though!

Thank you for your email Sandra. We are very pleased with how things are going. I pushed it, starting as early as I did, but it's nice to see such splendid results just as the warm season is beginning - here in Georgia. I hope to hear wonderful stories of your success this year!

I haven't had any trouble with buttercups, but I notice that they are pretty prolific in some folks' yards and quite a bit in the parks. Are they taking over on you?

This year we got free horse manure. I spread some over the garden bed and John tilled it in a week before we planted. When we dug holes for the tomatoes, John dropped a scoop of poo into each hole, but the scoops got bigger as he went down the row. Now we've got mushrooms growing underneath the tomatoes (long thin white stems with tiny greyish caps). I didn't realize it was the poo that did it until John said so. I thought we had a fungus infestation, but John said everything was fine. I'm still a little bit concerned, but the tomatoes are growing "great guns!"

Hi Sandra! Thank you for the kind words earlier this week. I/we are doing fine, fighting the good fight one day at a time, ya know? I just had to drop a note of reality into things. So many just don't really know what it's like. But thank you! You have such a kind spirit! Nice to know you're there!
