I've been thinking about KGI's commitment to people growing their own food and yes, I think the white house garden project is a great example, but another route might be to encourage low income housing government housing contracts to include garden spaces on the properties and classes to teach the tenants how to do it. I'll bet local master gardeners, KGI members, etc., would volunteer to teach people. I've observed that most of these places are "landscaped" with a few shrubs and grass and are really not people friendly. Tenants are expected to stay indoors and watch TV. If every person in America is entitled to a TV, they should be entitled to garden space.

Hi, Roger. I have a technical question for you.
I'd like to add a sentence to the masthead of my page that is my "theme statement" but I can't figure out how to do it. I tried typing it in after they words My Page, but the size was too big and I can't make it smaller. I'd appreciate some help. Thank you! Carola

Hi Roger,

You may have noticed that Kate has started a discussion "A festival for all of us"

Kate and I are hoping to set up an annual festival to be held in different countries, to get the thing rolling, Kate has agreed to host the first one in Australia and I will host the following one in France.

Firstly, I would love to hear your thoughts on this initiative and secondly to ask whether there is anywhere on the site where we can post "Information sheets" as our plans develop.

Perhaps, you would like to host the festival in Maine?? :-)

Roger, sorry, you might want to hold on that problem, I've just discovered it might be a problem at my browser..

If you have the above link then it should be ok - it's to my website.

Hi roger,
Just a quick problem for you. I just tried posrting a hyperlink in a discussion and it didn't appear - I ended up putting it in as a reference. It's in the treated wood issues discussion.
Whilst I'm here, I wanted to say that I think the new look is great and thank you again for all your efforts for us.

Just read the latest newsletter and the food garden at the White House is such a brilliant idea! I am thinking of a similar initiative in the UK - maybe a food garden at Buckingham Palace and one at 10 Downing Street! I really do hope you succeed. Is there anything us limeys can do to help? Or should we start a similar local initiative instead?

Colin

PS can you mail me direct as I don't have your email address.

Hi, Roger,
Thanks so much for organizing this site, and for all your other work in the area of (very) local food. Would it be all right with you if I added you to my friends list? Heather

I just read your article about home gardens' importance. I agree with most of it, but I have one concern. When you equated the home office tax break with doing the same for gardens, I felt a pang of fear. Years ago, according to my stepfather, some dodo in our state legislature got greedy about people's home gardens as an underground economic dodge and decided to forge a bill to tax them, forcing people to weigh their produce and give it a market value (and what is that these days?) and pay tax on it. I know that's not what you meant with your remark, but I really don't want the government nosing around in my backyard, and I don't want to count every green bean i grow and eat. Gardens have only benefited the government during extreme wartime conditions when ordinary people were supposed to live life off the grid so everything could be funnelled into guns and bombs. Corporate structures such as Monsanto, etc.trying to monopolize plant genetics are making any sort of independence difficult enough. An additional bureaucracy will only make it more difficult to garden so that people throw up their hands at the thought and wonder if the garden police are watching them over the fence. We have enough of that already from the lawn police keeping tabs on yards because of real estate values -- not people's quality of life. I think food should NOT be taxed in any way. Some states don't levy sales tax on food. Idaho does, although every once in a while someone tries to get a bill through to stop it -- always fails because in Idaho what else is there to buy for pleasure??? Eh?

Hi Roger,
Somewhere recently you asked if there were any suggestions as to things that would make the site easier to use.
I wondered if it would be possible to have some sort of id show up when you mouse over a friend's photo. The problem is that now people are getting so much enjoyment out of the site they change their id photo quite often and it's difficult to keep track - look at your own friends above - Penelope!!! Don't get me wrong, I love the different photos, I just wonder if you can help tell me who I am about to cross to!!
Second thing, is there a way of automatically adding a signature to posts and comment backs. I haven't found it yet.
Thanks for doing a great job.
Bonne Journee
Ian
