a p.s- --40´ is pretty hot. I´ve been told that plants stop growing at about 32' . you can tell if plants are stressed by heat just by feeling their leaves. don´t be fooled if they roll up their leaves in the heat, a lot of tropical plants do that and it does not mean they need water. if the leaves unfold in the cool of the evening, they are okay. hope this helps

I used live in a climate zone much like yours. I also used teracotta pots. local people paint the inside of the pots with mixture of deisel and asphalt for waterproofing. I did not like to have that near plants i was growing for food but i soon discovered i needed something to prevent the porous terracotta from evaporating the water. like you, i had to water twice, and sometimes three times a day. not only did the terracotta wick away the water but the rapid evaporation from the hot winds cooled the soil too much for most plants. I noticed the best local gardeners grew foodstuffs in old olive oil tins and such, and let the plants sprawl to shade and protect the soil from heat and wind. Finally, i retired all my terracotta to flowers or, for veggies, lined them with heavy food grade plastic --cut-up ziplock bags. expensive, but not as expensive as losing my plants.

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
