I misspelled Gaia, sorry! Re transition towns and permaculture, the two seem to fit together well. Hemenway talked about sharing fruits with neighbors. Each neighbor had different fruits to share, so everyone got a large variety of fruits. He rega...

I just read the second edition of Giaa's Garden, a great permaculture book. It has a very interesting chapter on urban permaculuture, reminds me a bit of transition towns. Anyway, I'm using David jacke's book to try and develop a perrmaculture des...

Adrian Fox replied to needles's discussion 'Top bar hives' in the group BeeKeeping
I'd recommend that any beginner goes with a standard moveable frame hive, such as a Langstroth. From what I've read about top bar hives there are problems if you don't do it right, especially from building of brace comb etc. Once you have learned ...

I am currently in bee school, trying to decide whether to go with a top bar or Langstroth hive. I'm planning on putting it on the roof of my garage, since I live in a very damp area and this would help with ventilation, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks!

As far as nutritionally related diseases go, the usual advice of eating a large variety of foods would apply. When working with immigrant populations, I would think the biggest problem would be cultural - can't find the foods they're used to, relu...

Good idea! I have been tossing around the idea of creating a root cellar in my garage, but I am concerned about the humidity causing damage to the structure. If I could locate a non-functioning walk in fridge or freezer, I suspect that would be id...

I didn't use any mortar on my cinderblocks either, it doesn't seem to have caused a problem. There's been no heaving and the weed growth has been about the same as the edges.

I'd prefer to have ducks, they seem a bit easier than chickens, and they eat slugs, of which I have lots, but my town doesn't allow you to have a "small household poultry flock" (4 or less) if you own less than 4 1/3 acres. Ridiculous, huh? KS

I have an established raised bed bordered by cinderblocks, but because I am planning on enlarging this bed, and curving it, and I'm really cheap, I'm planning on putting old gallon size plastic pots with their bottoms removed between some of the c...

I, too, have started my tomatoes too early for the same reason, but I do have nice a southern exposure. I plan on using a fan to help my tomatoes grow strong and stocky. Good luck!

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
