Good Morning! I put up about 30 quarts of salsa, and 30 lbs of beans. I lost alot of tomatos to black rot. It was a tuff year over this way for a lot of folks. Times are scary indeed. My freezer is full enough to last for a couple of months, I am starting to stock my canned goods pantry this week. I still have Limas to pick, and a boat load of acorn squash to freeze. Love you!! Your soil sounds like ours!! The New England area is known for our beautiful stone walls! But, I think of the back breaking work it took to clear the fields of those boulders and create these walls! It was all out of need... need to make growing space! Each year as I till my garden, more rocks come to the surface from frost heave. I think there is an old adage about "winter growing rocks", or something to that effect. But, this is OK. We need rocks too! I have used mine to build a stone wall for the chipmunks and toads to live in.

Hi Maria,
To answer your question about Kohlrabi, I consulted my old tattered copy of "The Victory Garden Cookbook" by Marian Morash. Under storage & preserving;
Separate leaves from the stems before storing. Refrigerate, unwashed in perforated plastic bags- will keep up to a week. Longer storage.. layer kohlrabi in moist sand in a cool cellar.
Whole kohlrabi freezes poorly because the texture breaks down. You can freeze pureed kohlrabi, but it will discolor. My thought, maybe if a little lemon juice is mixed in, it would keep its color?
Hope this helps you! I never put any of mine away, as we ate it too fast! :)
Love your photos!! I grew up in the Finger Lakes of New York State... my mother was from a small town in PA.
Do you have a lot of clay soil there?
:)

Awaiting Spring

Tomorrow brings a day of sleet, mush and rain. I am ready for spring, but what does this mean really. For I am not sure if a garden will get started this spring due to personal family issues. I am sad. Though never through intent did I seek changes in my life, I have brought them about.I am hoping that Allen will start the process of gardening since it seems he may still be in the house but also because he is so good at it. I am hopeful that the earth will nourish his heart and his spirit and th… Continue

Leaving the country....

It is the last weekend in August. My birthday was this past week marking every year "back to school" and the end of summer. I am sincerely grateful to have a job in a school that grants me the summers off, but having summers off just makes it more difficult to start again. I am leaving later today....with a heavy heart.
The garden is full and beautiful minus a few mishaps with the cucumber plants and the tomato cages falling over, it was a good season and now fall harvesting is upon us. My husba… Continue

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot especially at this time of year when the seed catalogues start arriving. The Pond family lived on a seven acre homestead of sorts in Westford Massachuset...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Donald you lucky to live in an area where you can start a new hive at any time during the year! In New York one could never start a new package in December! =8-o We'd love to see pix of your current hive. :)

Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.
