Hi, I'm Australian. I saw the show but I wasn't a fan. I guess it was good to get the idea out there to the general public but I felt they kind of nicked the 'guerrilla gardening idea and tried to turn it into some quick ratings. Are you based in ...

Are any of you from Australia? Did you see the Guerrilla Gardeners program on Channel 10? It was a lot of fun but it isn't running any more. They didn't let it run through all the episodes. It actually has a Wikipedia entry! I was reminded of the ...

I think my forest garden is an example of guerrilla gardening... The results are beautiful with minimum ecological Impact . Biodiversity is growing. Nature is exited ...Flowers and vegetables are happy and are close to the wild vegetation

Guerrilla Gardening

I have created a new group ^^ I'm not sure how to add members, so I hope people stumble accross it and get involved...

More information can be found here

I am more involved with this style of gardening at the moment, as I don't have a large back garden. My daffodils are growing nicely though, and my onions have sprouted *smiles* I just need to find a way to attatch their protective covering to the tubs... They keep blowing away. I need… Continue

Books

I love books. Has anyone ever read 'Living the Good Life - changing the world from your own backyard'? Tis by Linda Cockburn, an Australian woman. She and her family aimed to try and live as sustainably as they could for six months. They kept a goat and chickens and grew their own food. It is a really good book, informative, inspiring and often very funny.

Oh, and then there's 'Allotted Time' - although i have forgotten the author... Also a fabby book.

Right, speaking of boo

Hi. I'm catching up, reading all the messages in the chicken group. I saw you were asking for websites and books. Do try www.backyardchickens.com - its a great site. Try finding some books in the library first, to save money. Good luck.

I see above that you love books, and mention "Living the Good Life". I've never read the one by Linda Cockburn, but I know a book called "Living the Good Life" by Scott and Helen Nearing, Americans who led the back to the earth movement in the 50s. They built their own house by hand, lived without electricity or modern amenities, grew what they ate, and were vegetarians. He lived to be 100. She lived to be 90 (but died in a car accident). I started reading their work more than 20 years ago, and their lifestyle has been a strong influence on my own ever since.

Absolutely love the broccoli flute video!!!

HI Chibi,
Yes, we (my husband and I) have 13 alpacas. They are sweet critters, you can see some of the babies on my page.

Good that they are in trays, that way you can bring them inside and nurture them if it gets too cold. One thing I'm gonna have to tomorrow is clean up my green house so we can start little plants soon. I'll be buying some heirloom varieties soon, from a local source who has a wonderful selection of tomatoes, so this year I'm not starting from seed. I'm doing a bio-intensive method, so I'm only planning on 8 plants. Hopefully they won't get eaten by anything!

Mooli sound like fun. I just planted some radishes, and I just looked up mooli on images.google.com, so they are daikon radishes? That's what they look like to me, at least.

Greetings Chibi!

I grew up in the UK...Wales. I saw that your fave class was an environmental science class. I teach biology, ecology, and a class called AP Environmental Science. I love it! I am also very interested in how food production interacts with environmental concerns.

Have you read "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle?" It is one of my very fave books. Barbara Kingsolver. It is about her family taking a year to eat strictly in season and only locally. She is an amazing writer. Her daughter (university student) co-wrote it with her, as did her husband (university professor)

Very nice to see you here.

Wow, it's warm enough for Tomatoes there? go figure. I can't plant mine until after the last frost and that's 3/15. or are you starting them inside? If your tomatoes went rotten on the vine it might be end blossom rot which is a calcium deficiency. That can be fixed by adding egg shells into the hole before you plant them, or spraying the leaves with a calcium foliant spray after they've already been planted.

what are mooli?

I grow tomatoes, snow peas, lettuces, corn, cabbages, peppers, various herbs, hops, onions, spinach, pretty much anything. Flowers too, I especially like nasturtiums cuz they are pretty AND you can eat them :). I raise chickens and alpacas, so have a good source for manure too. :)

Welcome to our little corner of the universe, chibi! What a talented vegetable flautist you've found. It's nice to have another environmentalist here, I used to work for the Environmental Defense Fund.

Hope to see more of your postings!

Hi! And welcome!
You may want to look for Sarina, she is in the UK also, and she would be happy to chat with you about gardening.
I started a blog asking for people to give recommendations on their favorite books, and from that has sprung a whole new listing by Katherine Turcotte... so suggestions for books are many as you read through this site!
Happy gardening!

You're probably too young to know about it but "living the good life" reminds me of 'The Good Life' and old BBC sitcom about Tom and Barbara (Richard Briers, Felicity Kendall etc.) who went self sufficient in their 'semi'. My sister gave me a couple of years back, i think she saw a 'Tom' in me. It was a great series then, but probably aged a bit now.
