Have you thought of cinder blocks. I've seen these used on pavement and just about anywhere. They'll last for ever plus you'll get extra little pockets to plant in. Or you can put boards on the top to sit on.

Thanks for your help. Wish me luck!

There are lots of schools of thought out there on if amending the soil helps or not. I don't amend the planting hole, but usually I prepare the planting area months in advance, either building a compost pile on top or planting a green manure where...

They are full size. Do you know if good top soil is enough or do I need to add anything else?

Are they dwarf or full size? Dwarf trees need 6-15 feet spacing. Standard trees need 25-30 feet.

Hi Carol. I have a small orchard of 6 apple trees (plus one in my front yard). They are not dwarf varieties. These trees are about 25 years old. I've never measured, but I believe they are 10-15 feet apart. Please consider joining our Orchards gro...

I didn't use any mortar on my cinderblocks either, it doesn't seem to have caused a problem. There's been no heaving and the weed growth has been about the same as the edges.

I just added more to my garden. The first I made are from "recycled plastic decking" and were expensive. This year I found some 1 x 6 x 16' oak fencing and just screwed the corners with SS or coated deck screws. 2 boards in each frame were $10 ea ...

Raised beds do not have to be edged. They just need a lot of organic matter adding so they raise up above the normal soil level. I have half of my beds edged. The other half just have strings along the edges to define the shape. It depends how nea...

Hi Carol. I am pretty new to gardening. I grew day neutral strawberries last year in a 12 foot long by two foot wide raised bed made of untreated lumber--eight inches high. The berries were great but I got awfully tired of stooping and kneeling to...

Sounds like a really fun idea! Add a glass of chilled champagne to sip while you watch things grow!

I have an established raised bed bordered by cinderblocks, but because I am planning on enlarging this bed, and curving it, and I'm really cheap, I'm planning on putting old gallon size plastic pots with their bottoms removed between some of the c...

I think it is the weather and tomato variety, make the Italian tomatoes so good. Most american tomatos are bread to travel well. Look at the heirloom varieties.

In wet cold summers, my tomatoes do not taste as good as those in warmer dry summers. I also find they taste better if I pick them in the afternoon, rather than in the morning.

I have a question???

Good morning all, I'm new this morning to this forum. I enjoy gardening and have had a ? for a long time, does anyone know what Italians do to get such a great tasting tomato, the only thing I can think of is the volcanic soil. If it is that, is there anything we can do to replicate it? Thanks all, Carol

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
