Well, I didn't mean to kill the discussion... C'mon folks how do these ideas sound to you? What have yo been thinking about? Tough time of the year for this, what with all of the weeding, planting, watching, snacking on thinnings, and other stuff ...

I'm leaving the moles in my gardens alone. They are welcome to all of the grubs they can find. If they want some earthworms, too, well, I guess that's ok - I have plenty. Lots of big ones, too. More compost and straw makes more worms. I've got lo...

Diane, That's a great idea. If you go back and look at the Mayor Newberry's speachifying, you may remember his talking about building a new town hall (Mayors Office.) Not, of course, that the town needs a new Mayor Office building, however I ful...

I like San Marzano for drying. Romas are good, but San Marzano, although a little smaller, taste better and are non determinate so they produce longer. My feelers were smooshed, last year, by the local tomato expert. He informed me that San Marzan...

I wouldn't waste the seed. Just a bit of garden weed grass on top would be fine. Maybe with a bit of dirt still on the roots - for fun. I can picture the headlines now - "Neighborhood Yard Depressions and Holes Mysteriously Disappearing!" Or mayb...

Good luck with the electric fence. It didn't work on my 4 legged neighbor. It may be the thick hair, or maybe he likes the jolt. Whatever it is, I've seen him waddle through the wires, and he doesn't seem to notice. I'm planning on running a coupl...

I have seen folks use the poo to fill holes and depressions in the yard with very good results. Before too long the grass grows over it, or just put a chunk of grass weed from the garden on it to get it started growing. Amazingly, it doesn't seem ...

John, I have been told, by a couple of suppliers, that the blood meal and bone meal are going to be much more expensive because of the new regulations in place to try to stop the spread of mad cow. Something about it needs to be pasteurized and ce...

Hi John, Cats and hunters, but that's cruel. Folks roaming the yard slow them down, too. (They might as well weed, while they're roaming, but we know THAT doesn't happen around here.) I find that sometimes planting REALy HOT little round PEPPERS...

Ok Folks, I guess it's time to get busy - again. Let me re-phrase that - Oh Boy !!!! Spring is on it's way! I got to work in the garden the other day! I moved a Grape vine, pruned the Raspberries and Blackberries, fertilized the Asparagus (alas,...

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot especially at this time of year when the seed catalogues start arriving. The Pond family lived on a seven acre homestead of sorts in Westford Massachuset...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
