Thank you Toni for your advice about growing gemsquash. I think there are just too many bugs here to grow it, I think they sense something new and tasty! Then as you say if I time it wrong and get the humidity they just rot and die. I will continue to try though, that is one of the things we really miss!

Hi Toni
How are you settling into your new environment?
I continue to enjoy your book.

Hi Toni,
Do you grow gemsquash there? your climate would be similar to what I have here. I thought the winter would be the best time to plant them as our summers are very humid and hot. I planted some seeds, and they have come up but the plants look a little puny. There are flowers, but they just seem to be male flowers so far.

Hi Toni it is great to hear from you, I have been wondering how your move went. I look forward to hearing about how you are setting up your new garden. It would also be great to hear about the climate of the area where you are now living. I love your book and was reading the edible flowers section, we have a speckled borage coming up everywhere.
The only problem I have with your book is that the veggies and recipes look so delicious they make me hungry!

A dogs life or the good life, yes we are just starting the day. What a lovely view from your office.

Hi Toni re dogs again, sounds like your dogs are working dogs keeping the monkeys away. Here in suburbia a lot of dogs are locked up all day while their owners work. We walk our dogs daily but I am sure they would be happier in Scotland retrieving ducks and splashing through paddocks.

We don't have monkeys here. Sounds funny.

Living and Loving in My Garden

Gardens a for living and loving, and our garden seems to lend itself to family gatherings. In December 2008, dear friends Judd and Jeannie's got married in the garden in what was a very beautiful and special ceremony. They invited well over a hundred guests, and yet everything was planned with such care that there was virtually no impact on the garden from an environmental point of view. Guests were ferried backwards and forwards in a golf-cart to minimise traffic on the lawns, birdseed was scat… Continue

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot especially at this time of year when the seed catalogues start arriving. The Pond family lived on a seven acre homestead of sorts in Westford Massachuset...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
