Well done, Gary, the new BKs need to learn from those who are doing and the somewhat seasoned of us need to hear it again to keep us honed. Thanks.

A picture is worth a thousand words, Gary, thank you for sharing this experience with us. Talk is cheap and makes us weep, but action taken brings home the bacon. Old sayings aren't what they used to be, but you get the idea. Well Done!

I got my first swarm by rolling up my sleeves and carefully getting hands full of bees to shake into the brood chamber a friend of mine gave me. During that little escapade I had one of the little darlings hit me in the right eyebrow and sink her ...

There used to be a contest in Kentucky where beekeepers would find a swarm, find the queen, and put her on his bare chin. The rest of the bees will swarm to her and hang on. The pictures look like a beard, thus the contest is called "Bee Beard". W...

An old beekeeper in Kansas told me that if you mix 1 teaspoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1 pint of water, you can dab this around on your skin and clothes to keep the bees from smelling the human smell. I rolled up my sleeves above t...

Yes. A bee "suit" is white. I don't remember, it has been over 30 years since I studied the antics of bees, but I think black, blue, and purple all look black to a bee. Whether or not it is a Darwinian (of which I am no believer) fear of bears or ...

I don't particularly like yellow jackets either, but I have watched a co-worker on a construction site eating his lunch squeeze a ripe pear to cover his hands with juice and then let a great number of yellow jackets feast on the pear right in his ...

I don't condem your method, in fact I find it may be better to strike quickly and get the job done. I guess I was really reminiscing about the good old days when we were less informed. What we did worked, but this way you don't have to worry about...

Just a thought, sugar water does not have the proper nutrients for bees, but many a hive has been suckled through a harsh winter with this imitation nectar. In the spring the bees will gather honey and regain their strength. Sugar is not inexpensi...

Thank you for this modern update on an old problem in beekeeping. In my younger days, we didn't think of using these "fast" methods. The process was, completely surround the bees with a wire mesh they cannot pass through. I will admit a couch is m...

I had purchased a commercial bin for worms. It had a spiggot on the bottom to drain off the "tea". There were screened holes close to the top. The lid closed tight. There was, on the inside, a screen near the bottom to keep the soil from saturatin...

In my opinion, the best primer ever written on beekeeping is, "How to Keep Bees & Sell Honey". It can be purchased from Walter T Kelley of Clarkson Kentucky at WWW.kelleybees.com. I just got my new catalog from them and it is free. I found that af...

Now to be sure, when the day is extremely hot, or the nectar flow is in short supply, don't you know the little people take great sport in aggravating our little flying friends and putting the blame on us.

I think it would be interesting to see what other people are doing to and for the good old Mother Earth. I don't think all of the sciences and methods man has learned in history are for naught, but I agree we use them in a way which is more harmfu...

I remember hearing of such a wasp as you describe, but at that time I didn't have the opportunity to have a hive of my own, so, like many "Americans", I admit I diidn't pay any attention to another man's troubles. I don't remember them being in the USA. Thanks for the jolt.

Donald you lucky to live in an area where you can start a new hive at any time during the year! In New York one could never start a new package in December! =8-o We'd love to see pix of your current hive. :)

Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
