Hi Tamara, I have a few of these gallon glass jars, and they are very handy when making my ginger beer. This winter I want to try making comfrey tea in them. Because I have very close neighbors, I have decided to try making it in a gallon glass jar during the winter.......am thinking about the smell when the comfrey ferments. I like drinking room temperature water, so I use the jars to keep water on my kitchen table. If you buy the apple juice from the farmers' market maybe you can returns some of the jars to the apple farmers.

Hi Tamra. I do remember our discussions. I'm glad John's advice helped you in your garden. I discussed the glass jar issue with John this morning, and he says there would be minimal difference between the plastic and glass. The glass jars would absorb and release heat slightly faster, but the difference would be immeasurable. He recommends you not use glass. Even only 3/4 full, the water will want to expand horizontally when it freezes instead of vertically in the bottle, and you will risk the glass shattering in the garden. John says the risk isn't worth the minimal (immeasurable) difference the glass would make in heat exchange. Hope this helps!

Oh, let's not talk about weeds! My gardens are a mess! It doesn't help that I am a freelance writer and have to spend so much time online. (I write for the Nashville Gardening Examiner -- http://www.examiner.com/x-2461-Nashville-Gardening-Examiner --online, even tho I'm in NE TN.) I've also been selling mints, herbs, and perennials at the local Farmer's Market. Seems I haven't had as much time to garden as I would like. My birthday is coming up the first part of October, tho, and I've told my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and granddaughter's boyfriend that for my birthday they are coming over to help dig and divide. I'm expanding my "lily pad" and my herb garden plus adding a garden for gladiolus and and another for sedums. I'm a bit of a plant collector. If I find one variety of something I like, I wind up with at least 10 different varieties (or more :) I went on a goldenrod kick about 3 years ago. My 'Fireworks' goldenrod is absolutely beautiful right now. Seems we're going to have an early fall.

And I'm going to join that TN gardeners group. Thanks for the info.

Your garden is beautiful-especially with the purple accents. I also love the hydraulic arms on your cold frames. I was planning to use hydraulic arms on the cold frame we are building to keep my kids from smashing fingers or dropping the lids, but now I am going to give my husband the added challenge of making them solar powered and temperature sensitive like yours. He's a mechanic so I'm hoping he can figure it out and save some cost.

I saw your comment on Michelle's page about tomato seed saving. I have no experience with seed saving, so excuse my ignorance. How long can you save the seeds? Do you collect them now to plant next spring or do you plant now and keep them in the green house over winter?

Ok, so that is exactly where I am, The bush beans look a little sad now so into the compost they will go. I may hit the poles with some cal mag and seaweed tea and try for one more round. Thanks.

Oh, I see your info. I am on year 3 of a local eating path, but have to suppliment from the local farmer's market. I am very impressed by the volume that you and Michelle knock out. I process everyday something canned/frozen/dreid and can barely keep up.
I have noticed some green bean issues and am wondering about it. The first and second bloomings start out tender and delicious but towards the tail end of the blooming I noticed that my beans get very tough and woody. Is there something I can do to avoid that? Also, is there a place where you just stop feeding the beans, pull them up and replant? if so, when do you do that.

I noticed some powdery mildew starting on my squash vines, cut it off and am hoping for the best. What does "color cup" mean in reference to the peppers? I just have hundreds of green tomatoes and they will just not ripen!
