I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...

I have noticed that my purple kale is only purple when the weather is cold, just like your red beets.

Then I bet it is deer or bunnies. I have never been successful with brussels, but don't give up. Since we are having such a mild fall you might still get something. I have still not had a hard freeze, but that might just happen tonight. But the br...

Oh, let's not talk about weeds! My gardens are a mess! It doesn't help that I am a freelance writer and have to spend so much time online. (I write for the Nashville Gardening Examiner -- http://www.examiner.com/x-2461-Nashville-Gardening-Examiner --online, even tho I'm in NE TN.) I've also been selling mints, herbs, and perennials at the local Farmer's Market. Seems I haven't had as much time to garden as I would like. My birthday is coming up the first part of October, tho, and I've told my daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter, and granddaughter's boyfriend that for my birthday they are coming over to help dig and divide. I'm expanding my "lily pad" and my herb garden plus adding a garden for gladiolus and and another for sedums. I'm a bit of a plant collector. If I find one variety of something I like, I wind up with at least 10 different varieties (or more :) I went on a goldenrod kick about 3 years ago. My 'Fireworks' goldenrod is absolutely beautiful right now. Seems we're going to have an early fall.

And I'm going to join that TN gardeners group. Thanks for the info.

I am in NE TN in Zone 6. Have recently joined this site and am finding so many gardeners that live near me. I even met one at the Farmers Market this past Wednesday.

Your garden is beautiful-especially with the purple accents. I also love the hydraulic arms on your cold frames. I was planning to use hydraulic arms on the cold frame we are building to keep my kids from smashing fingers or dropping the lids, but now I am going to give my husband the added challenge of making them solar powered and temperature sensitive like yours. He's a mechanic so I'm hoping he can figure it out and save some cost.

I saw your comment on Michelle's page about tomato seed saving. I have no experience with seed saving, so excuse my ignorance. How long can you save the seeds? Do you collect them now to plant next spring or do you plant now and keep them in the green house over winter?

On another topic, I have pulled up the butternuts and vines, they were ready early this year, and have some room for a small crop of something. I saw your collards, is it too late to plant some? How do you go about it.

Ok, so that is exactly where I am, The bush beans look a little sad now so into the compost they will go. I may hit the poles with some cal mag and seaweed tea and try for one more round. Thanks.

Oh, I see your info. I am on year 3 of a local eating path, but have to suppliment from the local farmer's market. I am very impressed by the volume that you and Michelle knock out. I process everyday something canned/frozen/dreid and can barely keep up.
I have noticed some green bean issues and am wondering about it. The first and second bloomings start out tender and delicious but towards the tail end of the blooming I noticed that my beans get very tough and woody. Is there something I can do to avoid that? Also, is there a place where you just stop feeding the beans, pull them up and replant? if so, when do you do that.

I noticed some powdery mildew starting on my squash vines, cut it off and am hoping for the best. What does "color cup" mean in reference to the peppers? I just have hundreds of green tomatoes and they will just not ripen!
Where is Tn are you?

Oh! And lots of pickled peppers!

Hi Tamra. So good to hear from you! :o)
I appreciate the advice on harvesting tomato seeds. The thing is, I'm harvesting them from tomatoes I'm processing. So they're collecting in a fine mesh colander. I've finally gotten the hang of it after processing three batches, and I've collected several thousand seeds already. I know, I don't need them all. but in case I loose some during the fermenting stage, it's good to have extras. I might give some away later, if I can find anyone who wants them. Seed saving is new to me, but I'm learning! And I'm enjoying it.

I don't know when I was going to get around to telling you, but I've had great luck with cucumbers this year, and I've made dill* pickles, kosher dills, and.... Tamra's sweet pickle relish! (I loved the story you told with the recipe.) We had a little extra after all the canning, and I let my husband eat it. He loves it! And I can't wait to taste it myself. I can't remember how many jars I canned, but I know I'll be making more before the summer is over. I also used your *pickled pepper recipe (minus the garlic) to make dill pickles, pickled squash, and pickled okra. Can't wait to taste all of those either! In a few weeks I'll post a blog about all the produce and the canning, and pictures (if I have time). Are you canning much this summer?
