Hi Avegail. Your UD tomatoes look great! You've got some nice sized fruit growing. What type tomato did you plant? I planted "Better Boys", and I used Osmocote too, and grew my UD tomatoes in deep planters. I didn't want to use the 5 gallon bucket...

Did you try it? I did it with the 12" hanging baskets . I also used the 5 gallon buckets again this year to compare. I'm quite pleased with the hanging baskets. I used about 1 Tbsp of zebra pellets for water absorption, equal parts of perlite, sph...

Am using two topsy turvy hangers for growing my tomatoes and one plant already has about 8 tomatoes on it. We only water our plants once or twice a week. Sometimes we have forgotten about watering them and they've survived. They hang from front of...

Are they getting enough water and adequate drainage? Did you give them some sort of fertilizer when you started them? Were the roots damaged in some way or the stems broken or injured?

I stake my upside down tomatoes. Geotropism is what makes them turn upward. It's easier to stake the tomatoes when they're young and the limbs are supple, but you can still stake older ones, just tie the string more loosely, it still will help to ...

Cathy, I can't tell you why some are dying. I can only tell you what I'm doing. I planted them in the topsy turvy planters just to see what would happen. I used a mixture of moisture control soil, peat moss, perlite and crushed egg shells. At firs...

Help. I have planted many tomatoes upside down -- some are doing great, some wilt and die immediately after planting. Any idea why?

Try using paint buckets instead, works great. Drill a hole in the bottom of the container and cover the roots and all but 3-4 in. or so of the stem. You can use just about anything to hold the plant secure until the roots set up and while you're a...

Rick, I'm so glad to hear that using sticks to straighten out your tomatoes is working out for you! Mind you, I broke one of mine twice in the same place trying to "gently" train them to the stick. Both pieces that broke off had blossoms on them. ...

Hi Michelle, I looked up your page and will keep checking back to compare results. Spent the morning tying my sticks and trying to overcome the hefty S-bends. The sticks are simply an excellent solution. All of our plants are Roma. Our Better Boys...

I don't know if I can grow artichokes in Georgia. I've been mildly interested, but have made other plants my preference. I have eaten artichokes, but don't care for them significantly. Do some internet research and find out if they can grow in you...

It will be interesting to see how the plants hold up when the tomatoes ae so big. Do you know anything about artichokes? I would like to grow some but don't know a thing about them.

Hi Marla. These are Better Boys. They are supposed to get big, and so far, they're heading that way.

Those look great. What kind are they?

Here's a picture of my upside down tomatoes. I planted them very early this year because we had good warm weather. The one on the left is doing the best. Last night I counted almost 45 tomatoes of various sizes. I'm very pleased with the success I...

Marla, Ellie is a real cutie pie! And I like the looks of that giant aloe vera nearby. I planted a yellow variety tomato last year. It never produced much. The fruit was small, and I wasn't all that fond of the taste. I hope you fare better with y...

Hi Tam, I saw your query in the discussion about file size limits for photos.

There is a 10M limit imposed on photos uploadeed to the site. This limit is imposed by ning and is outside our control. However, smaller files will load must faster leading to better experience by the community

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
