I am planning this for Friday night. We keep chickens and always have plenty of eggs.

We tried this yesterday morning and everyone ate it up! The kids looked at it a little suspiciously, "Is this Chard?" I lied, "No, it's spinach." They loved it.

Lydia, Do you keep your birds all together or do you have separate runs for them? I'd love to have guinea fowl, but they are too noisy for my neighbors. I sell my extra eggs, just to friends so far, I applied to the Maryland Department of Agricul...

I LOVE chard and my favorite is a recipe that makes 'chard' grape leaves..... OK- essentially you take some hamburger, mix it with one egg, lots of fresh herbs and combine. Then take chard leaves and boil or steam them QUICKLY and them once cook, ...

Another idea for using chard is to eat it raw in the form of a wrap or spring roll for an easy snack. Use the leaf like a tortilla and spread hummus or your favorite dip/cheese, add some shredded carrots, cucumber sticks, or other veggies. Then ro...

Oops, my husband just reminded me that we eat chard, chopped fine and stir fried with a little bacon and onion into our scrambled eggs for breakfast. Considering that we had it just this morning, I can't believe that I forgot to mention it! LOL!

I've used chard in a variety of recipes, including chopping it fine and adding to meatloaf and even artisan loaves of bread. We love chard! Have you thought of canning or drying it for use later in the Winter? I've taken the ribs and chopped them ...

Hi Susan I have emailed someone I know to send me their pickled egg recipe, so I will pass it on when I get it.

Susan, I'm sorry to hear what happened to your hens. There is no understanding why nature does what she does sometimes. We just have to adjust course and continue on. Good for you, putting the perpetrators in the freezer! That'll teach 'em.

Hi there. I'm just catching up reading all the posts in "The Pecking Order". I saw your dillema over the chicken that bled passing an egg. Did anyone respond to you with a satisfactory response? Blood is not uncommon when a chicken passes an egg. It happens occassionally. It just means it was a hard pass. You should only be concerned if the chicken develops a continuous flow of blood, which might indicate an ifection that has caused some internal damage. But that is not common. I've seen plenty of eggs with a spot of blood on them, over the years.

Do you have a local vet that can humanely put the hen down? Why the pecking? Are they hens pecking eachother? What part of the body are they pecking - under the chicken, or the head area?

Hi again, Susan. I just noticed your query about the blood on your auracana chicken on another list. I have had the same problem with my Muscovy ducks a couple of times this winter. After getting myself badly scratched up (they have big claws) I managed to determine that the blood was coming from cuts on their feet and legs. Evidently the cuts bled heavily, which is how they ended up getting their undersides all bloody. I still don't know what caused the cuts -- possibly it's related to the cold (it seems to coincide with cold snaps). However, I can tell you that it hasn't happened often and that the cuts seem to heal up fine with no adverse consequences. The blood is quite alarming to see, though! Of course, I don't know whether what happened to your chickens is the same as what happened to my ducks, but if you're not seeing any indication that their bodies are injured I would check the feet and legs.

Hi Susan, was your chicken with the blood at vent okay? All I could think of was that either another chicken picked at her or she had some gunk stuck and it came off and made her bleed. I hope she is okay? Weird things can happen to chickens and I am no virgin to chicken problems, trust me on that one lol

Susan -- what a lovely offer. Thank you. I will let you know when we are coming to that area. I agree with you on the biology issue. It has been treated as a school subject by most. But honestly it is crucial information for connecting with the world around us, rather than living outside the world and using it.
