- Hi Skip. Must apologize. Having a very distracting week. (lol) Realized I mentioned the Pickling and Kimchi discussion to you (which is someone else's and a group of it's own) instead of your canning recipe discussion. I just thought you'd have a better response to your discussion in the "Preserving the Harvest" group. I'm glad Angie started the group. Turns out me and a few others were on the verge of doing so ourselves. I'm glad she took it on. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your canning recipes. I especially love the old-fashioned (handed down through the family) recipes.
Got any squash canning recipes? I pickled some last year, but they're on the sweet side, and I don't really care for them. I expect to have a lot of squash this year, and would love a good old fashioned canning recipe, but I can't find anything I like on the web. Do you have some canned squash recipes you'd like to share? Sure hope so!

- Hi Skip. Angie Knost is going to be starting a Canning and Preserving Recipe group very soon. I thought you might like to move your Pickling and Kimchi discussion there when it's up so it can get more attention. The Root Cellar group is really supposed to focus on methods of preservation rather than recipes. I don't want your discussion to lose out on the chance for a stronger focus in the canning group.

he is hoping to retire in the next year or so... and just fish. He does not trout fish right now... but he is all set up to fly fish when he does find the time. We have some very good places in this area and if all else fails there is always the fish ponds at L.L.Bean!!! Have you ever been to Maine? I forget if you were the one who said they were here in autumn.

- Last winter was a tough one. We had many heavy storms and then rain on top of it. People lost homes, garages, barns, and shed due to collapse. Typically, a 6" snow fall is a medium to heavy storm. At any given time we may have ground accumulation of a foot to two feet of snow. Last winter was an exception as we had 4 feet + of accumulation. I struggled to keep the shed and boat house from collapsing! We have a plow truck, but it is getting elderly, so this past spring I purchased a snow blower for my compact tractor. I am hoping it will suffice, and I think in some way it may be better. We live on a private road that we have to do snow removal for ourselves. I think having a blower will help a lot, as now I can blow the snow back into the woods and prevent so much banking on the edges. The road got pretty narrow last winter!

I am a summer girl... so I "endure" winter!
What is the landscape around your area? From your photos it looks to be very flat. We have sea marsh, low land plains, and some rolling hills with a lot of rivers, lakes, and streams. We are not far from the White Mountains or the ocean. We have a lot of forested areas and some farms are left.
Do you live in an agricultural area?
What I enjoy about this website is the variety of people and places and how diverse lifestyles can enjoy a community!

Do you get much for snow in your region? We have not yet had any... and that is fine with me!!!

Joe Lamp'l said… - Hi Skip. I sure wish we were still producing new shows of Fresh from the Garden. I think it's time for a total redo of that series using all organic methods. I do think that show will become more popular than even in 2009 with so many more people interested in growing their own food. I may do my own series anyway for internet viewing. I'll keep you guys posted.
