I'm with Sara! It's not so bad gardening here in New England. It was my first summer gardening (adventures online at my blog Seeds & String), and I had some success! I also really enjoy/rely upon Damrosh's Garden Primer. Highly recommended. I don...

Hi Stephanie, it's not as bad as you think--also from what I understand in SF you can't really grow tomatoes easily for lack of sun--that works out well here. I think the key is starting seeds indoors or just buying transplants. There's all this s...

Hey fellow members, I'm new to the Boston area, or to any cold climate are in general. I moved out here from Berkeley CA where I had a garden, I'm going to need a lot of advice about how to plant in places where it actually (heaven forbid!) frosts...

Nice job! I am a knitter too--I've slowed down a bit as I always do in summer. I have never tried washcloths! It would probably be a nice relaxing way to knit (no worries about gauge!)

I have a compost bin much like this one and I also have the one that is three stackable sections. I much prefer it. It is always hard to turn stuff near the bottom of a big bin. With the stackable one you just take off the top sections and start t...

Hi, Today I also bought two compost bins similar to the ones you linked to, and set them up in back of our shed. I've already put about 8 inches' worth of pulled weeds in the first one. It'll be great when the autmn leaves fall, and also when I do...

Great idea! I have heard of a Sunflower house but not a Bean Tepee. What fun to think that the kids could sit in there and munch away.

Hi Sarah!
I do enjoy the NYT!
And because I live in such a rural area, we don't have any paper delivery (or mail delivery - I have to pick-up at the P.O., or trash pick-up or curbside recycling...).
But what I do have is almost 95 acres of the most beautiful place on earth! I have approx. 60 acres wooded, the rest is open land. I have about 35 acres of tap-able Maple trees and someday I hope to get that going, too. But for now I have to focus on recovering the pasture areas, hopefully building my chicken coop this summer, starting some apple trees and permanent berry plantings. Lotta work to do!
It should be safe to plant out some things soon, though and I have onions, potatoes, strawberries and beans ready to go!
P.S. We also don't have TV - this is by choice though, and I don't miss it at all.

SaraB, every time I read a comment of yours I instantly picture you cooking or growing whatever it is you're talking about at the house where I grew up in Winchester. Really bizarre, can't help it. Haven't been there for decades.

Hi! My little one is 14 months, too! Born January 31st. She's the youngest of my 3 girls. My older girls are 6 and 7. Maybe we should start a group about gardening with small children? I could sure use some ideas on what to do with her (she's not a good napper) and have been toying with the idea of making a spot for her in my garden to play that is contained, lol.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
