I'm harvesting many red and green jalapenos. I've been canning them, but today I am making jalapeno poppers, stuffing them with herbed cream cheese, and breading them. I'll deep fry some for dinner, and freeze the rest.

If it started out red, it isn't a jalapeno, and I would guess it'll be a hot one! Jalapenos turn from green to red as they mature, and the red ones are usually hotter than the green. Still good, though, if you get them picked before the skin begin...

I have a Jalapeno pepper plant with about 20-30 peppers on. But there is a red pepper just sprouting. Is this unusual, and will it be hotter than the green ones?

My sister has a 1 year old and 2 new "Home Run" roses. They did leaf out and start to bloom, but suddenly the leaves got white spots, holes, and then died off. She thinks the roses are dead. Are they? What can be done to save her roses?

Thanks for the tips. I guess since I don't drink coffee, I will try the dish soap first. And I do have it in a pot on my porch, so perhaps it is not slugs. But I will keep an eye out. Thanks again. I'll update on my progress.

Chris! You don't need chemicals! I tell you the coffee grounds work WONDERFULLY. Slugs are repelled by the caffeine in the grounds, it's toxic to them. And it's a slow release nitrogen. :) It's working great for me, it saved my basil and bean plants.

I agree with Joy, slugs can demolish basil over night (learned the hard way). I generally don't find the need to use chemicals in my yard, but I would make the exception for slugs! Their eggs can lie dormant in the soil for years, and can emerge i...

Check at night to make sure it's not slugs. If it is, the dishwashing soap won't do anything about that, (though it's good for most other insects!) The treatment for slugs is coffee grounds and oyster shells or diatomaceous earth. That works on so...

I don't know what is eating your basil, but a general remedy to keep bugs off most plants is to spray them with a mix of dishwashing liquid and water. Just add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to a spray bottle of water. It will deter most bugs o...

I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...

Hi shery, The reason farmer put thing in the cellar was it stayed 55-60 degrees year around & a dry cool mostly. The best thing is to store any veggies where air can circulate. One way is to build a 2"x4" frame with cross runner every 24", you can...

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Bees and other creatures pollinate our crops. Birds and toads eat insect pests. Many animals play a helpful role in the vegetable garden. How can we make our garden friends feel at home?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
