I agree that a major rethink about yields is needed. This is well demonstrated in the Seed Savers film "Our Seeds ... Seeds Blong Yumi" where they talk to a coffee grower who is cultivating new varieties of Coffea arabica as well as Coffea robusta.…

Hi there to my new friends and thank you so much for inviting me to the group Maggie. I'm really busy at the moment organising a local food group to meet twice a month for swapping food and seeds and doing propagation workshops at our local community garden and nursery. Tomorrow we will be finalising plans for an event in support of the International Seed Swap Day of Action on Saturday 31 January 2009 so please stay tuned for details. It will be held at Bidjiwong Community Nursery in Baulkham Hills (Sydney). In the meantime, visit www.foodnotlawns.com if you'd like to get information on how to organise your own local event.

Hi girls and thank you for your warm welcome.

I've just got back from 4 days at the Peats Ridge Festival doing seedsaving/local food/permaculture/sustainability workshops and it was just fabulous. I'm working on a slideshow that I will post as a Quicktime movie somewhere, just as soon as I figure out how/where to do that!

Maggie, I've been to Adelaide recently for the first time and loved it, particularly the Hills area. Is Hills & Plains a LSN with the SS Network? We have a seedsaving discussion group going there and trying to get more discussion happening but starting an Australian Gardeners group here would be great (still learning how to use this site).

I will write about my home garden soon.

Lettuce be & give peas a chance!

Hi Robyn, welcome to KGI. I am part of a seedsaving group in Adelaide. If you check my page you will see the address for our Hills and Plains Seedsavers group. We meet several times a year and exchange seeds, seedlings, cuttings or excess produce. We also arrange visits to organic farms around Adelaide
I would love to here about your garden.I think we should start a group here, Australian Gardeners.

Hi Robyn. Welcome to KGI. This is a really great website, and I hope you'll think the same before too long. Our members are professionals and amateurs, beginners and long-time gardeners. Some garden on acres of land, some on lots, some in containers, and at least one on her window sill! I hope you will take the time to peruse our membership. I'm sure you'll find members with interests similar to your own. Permaculture and seedsaving are two popular topics on this site. And we have many members from down under. You could do a search in the membership section if you wanted to find them. We have a lot of great groups. Front yard gardening, Gardening in General, Container Gardening, organic gardening... some are specific to topics or areas around the world. Join as many as you like.
The forum discussions are always interesting, informative, and fun to participate in. The blogs are also interesting and informative, and sometimes sentimental. Lots of folks post great recipes on their blogs. It would be great if you could share the recipe for that tart you're holding! Others besides me will ask!
And the photographs are absolutely inspirational! Wait until you see what some folks are doing with their little plots of land or apartment terraces!
Enjoy yourself at KGI, And, oh, leave comments! Anywhere and everywhere! Members really enjoy getting comments on their pages, blogs, forums, and photos. It's encouraging to give and receive comments, and it's the best way to make friends and get to know each other.
Best wishes, and Happy Holidays!

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
