I would certainly move my compost pile. Establishing a good relationship with your neighbor starting with this issue will likely benefit both of you in the future.

This could be a great opportunity to make a new friend. If you can, move your compost to a different part of the yard then ask him for his compostable materials.

Glenn and Clarence make good points about moving the pile. As far a neighborhood relationships go, I find it is best to go the extra mile to keep the peace. You don't want the neighbor getting so upset over this, that he goes to the city and gets ...

You only get smells during anerobic decomposition. If the heap is too wet & with insufficient brown material it may smell. It may need turning to add more air. It might be a good idea, if space allows, to move the heap away from his terrace. The t...

If you only put vegetable matter into the compost bin and turn it frequently, there should not be an odor. You might speed up the process by putting redworms into the bin. There are products that can be purchased from Gardens Alive (gardensalive.c...

If your neighbor says he can smell your compost heap, or thinks he can smell your heap... he can. We who garden, and love compost, have a tolerence for the smell of compost the same as horse folks do not find horse manure smelly. Try adding more ...

Once I composted in a trash can that did not have good enough drainage, and my compost smelled. If yours truly does smell, is it too wet?
June 12
Unless manure is green it doesn`t smell !! Chances are the compost doesn`t smell but he just knows its there and imagines it does !!

I live in St Croix, about 400 miles east of you, and maybe a bit dryer being a smaller island. Here people grow tomatoes, capiscums, cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, okra, corn, aubergines, long green beans and all the tropical and subtriopical fruit. Almost all the Caribbean islands I've been to have an Agricultural Extension Office or similar - a gov dept that gives advice and often seeds and seedlings and young trees, at ridiculously low prices (ours is 5c for seedling vegetables, which seem to grow better than from seed packets). The easiest is Malabar Spinach which is a climber and very hardy, but also chinese cabbage and something called mustard greens, plus collards. Yiou can grow lettuces in winter (and big timatoes, otherwise cherry varieties are all year)... Hope that helps.
Roses are pretty miserable here, it's a huge waste of effort recreating England - you could have something really glamourous like porcelaine roses, and other heliconia type things!

There are certain foods native to the Caribbean climate, talk to the natives, visit the markets and find out what these are. Do not expect too much that plants from the temperature climate would do well in tropical climate. The Carribbean has tons to native plants(food). Sort them out. For example pigeon pea, great substitute for garden pea.....that does well in a tropical climate. Check out this blog from Trinidad & Tobago http://caribbeangarden.blogspot.com/ Then visit other Caribbean Blogs.
Enyoy yourself while you learn about the growing conditions and the plants that survive in the Caribbean.

Hola and Thanks Penelope. Yes I will post some photos but for the meantime the only plants I´ve put and which are growing are : Tomatoes.Oregano,Capiscums, Beet spinach, basil, english mint, shallots and parsley. The gardener has planted a collection of trees: Lime, Avocado. papaya, oranges, platanos, guineos(bananas), our first crop of platanos is just arriving and yesterday I had a gin and tonic with one of our own limes! My wife says there are some local roses but they´re a bit boring. Sadly its too hot here for apples unless , of course, you know of a tropical apple! Any advice would be appreciated.

Wow, the Caribbean! Any pictures of your place? I'm imagining all sorts of lovely tropical plants.

About peas -- they like cool weather. I plant mine when there's still snow on the ground in late March or Early April. They're up about 5 inches now. I've never tried growing roses from the seeds in the rosehips, I imagine -- but I have grown apple trees from seed for fun. One of the trees that's survived "up the crik" here in Idaho has some pretty tastey apples. the people who own the property now gave me a box of them and I made pies and apple butter. I don't imagine apples do well in the tropics. I remember Henry Fonda talking about growing a tree in Los Angeles and rare it was that he got apples -- then he described biting into the first apple -- his description made me salivate -- an interesting man/actor.

I hope you contribute more -- there are other expat brits on here too I've noticed.

Donald you lucky to live in an area where you can start a new hive at any time during the year! In New York one could never start a new package in December! =8-o We'd love to see pix of your current hive. :)

Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
