some people collect gardening books like some of us collect cookbooks. we like the solid paper pages, photos, stability of print. when the internet isn't working, we had something to hold in our hands. real books don't require electricity or month...

Paella, Spaghetti sauce the way I make it, Greek marinated cauliflower, Shortrib one-pot meal with carrots, whole onions, potatoes and giant wedges of cabbage; raw peas fresh from the garden, new potatoes roasted in butter with coarse sea salt, pickled beets, wilted lettuce with green onions and hot bacon vinaigrette, steamed fresh green beans, homemade wholegrain bread with raspberry jam

Pesto

I just made a wonderful batch of fresh pesto with Genovese basil from my garden, pine nuts, freshly graded parmesan cheese, extra virgin olive oil and garlic. I grew garlic this year for the first time and it formed large lovely bulbs, the kind with the hard stem in the center. The basil perfumed the whole house -- not only does good food taste delicious, but pleasant aromas add greatly to the pleasure and contentment of a household.

Juggling the Jungle

I was out of town for three days and returned to my garden feeling overwhelmed. Everything looks overgrown, going to seed, full of weeds, completely unmanageable. I know all this didn't happen in three days; my perception shifted is all, and I've drifted into my annual midsummer panic.

Wilted Lettuce, Wilted Life

Today, at long last, my leaf lettuces are big enough to harvest to make a bowl of my grandmother's wilted lettuce recipe. The leaves are washed and draining in a colander along with a handful of scallions. For lunch, I will finely chop some bacon ends and pieces and cook them crisp in my 4 or 5-inch cast iron skillet, add fresh ground pepper, a teaspoon of sugar and a healthy amount of red wine vinegar (sometimes I use cider vinegar). Sunshine in Pocatello and a bit about Onions

Today, April 5, isn't particularly warm, but the sun is shining and I've once again been puttering in my small garden. These past weeks we've been inundated with wild snowstorms nearly every day. It snows, then melts; we get our hopes up, then it snows again. We are tired of winter and anxious about getting our gardens started.

How is your new place? Are you enjoying it? Any new recipes? My friend Jonathan made a curry last night, a bit too hot for me, but the flavor was good. I made crab cakes from canned crab which were pretty good with the lime flavored sauce.

Yes enjoying living here it is much warmer and the house in centrally heated. Last year this time we were freezing and walking through snow, the climate is much milder the food is more economical and more diverse as well. Love a good curry, he needs to make those milder creamier ones for you. I am making brocolli soup at the moment, as for new recipes I always have some. Will post one or two tomorrow. Getting back to pulses in the cold weather might make a lentil salad or pilav. pomegrantes are still in so enjoying them and have just processed a few kilos of olives for fun. Like your web site and will have to sign up for the updates. I had a potter for a friend who made custom designed funeral urns, she did quite well. Maybe your shrouds will be the same. Take care.

On grapevine pruning Penelope I meant to say I prune last seasons growth down to two nodes each when the vine is leafless or just as it's starting new growth - NOT the new growth coming on!

We went to where my husband has some land in a mountain village on the weekend. There are trees laden with pomegranetes and figs. İ made fig jam and İ will go back and take as much as İ can to make more jam and fig chutney. İm also not leaving all those pomegrantes there either so hopefully will go back in a months time to harvest those.

İm surprised to hear its that cold there already, Carol said they had thier first freeze she is somewhere over there. İt is still about 25 degrees during the day and getting cool at night. Just cold enough for a light jacket. İf its windy you need a bit more. Thank God here will not be as cold as the last place, they have told me it snows though. Hows your new room mate going? Basil is still going strong here to.

I ended up with some surprise plants, too. I have several yellow tomatoes of some sort. I canned two pints of them today. It might be strange to eat soup this winter and have yellow broth instead of red but I couldn't let them go to waste! Let me know if you want any zucchini! I've been giving them away lately. About the time I get sick of them they slow down.... but meanwhile I have a month or so of over abundance.

Hi, Penelope! Hows it going? My tomatoes have started to come in - finally. What a strange year. I planted 'mixed' tomato seeds and found out I have a number of yellow tomatoes coming in - I was waiting for them to turn red until I found a rotting one and realized that's what I had! How fun! I think I like the 'unknown' tomato plant approach, its more of an adventure! How are your tomatoes?

Could you possibly dehydrate your pesto (just the basil, nuts, cheese, lemon juice) in an oven or food dehydrator and re-constitute it with olive oil when you're ready to use it? I checked my food dehydrator manual and didn't see a listing for pes...

Hi Mike There is nothing tastier than fresh pulled carrots. Of any vegetable i think there is the biggest difference between shop bought carrots and home grown carrots.
