- Hi Pattie. I was reading comments in Roger's discussion, "Next Steps for the Eat the View campaign," and I saw you mention that you are working on our Georgia governor to have a garden. I think that's great! I mentioned the idea to Roger a few months ago to approach governors, but I don't have any possible voice in that area myself, and unfortunately, not enough time to do it. I'm pulled in many directions already. But I told Roger I got the idea to approach governors when I read the obituary for Cornelia Wallace, wife of former Alabama governor George Wallace, who died in January. She very actively urged citizens to plant vegetable gardens to be more self-reliant. Several state representatives joined her in in planting a garden in the back yard of the governor's mansion. I thought you might like to know this as it may be a worthwhile story to add to your argument for our governor to plant a garden. Or maybe the approach is through Sunny's wife... or legislators.
Good luck taking on this worthwhile task.

- I've been reading FoodShed Planet. More to read, but I'm enjoying it. I live in Walton County, east of Atlanta, and I'm interested in what you are doing "in town."
I love chickens too. My family had an assortment of chickens when I was growing up. My mother was particularly fond of her Chinese Silkies, Charlie Chan and Anna May Wong. When I married John 5 years ago he had 3 aging hens that I adored. They gave us just enough eggs to keep John in omlets through the week.
The girls had the run of the yard, and ran to us from every direction when we drove in the gate. I'd raise the hatchback, and they'd jump in to see what we'd brought. They were also responsible for scratching to pieces my first container garden.
They always came running when I went outside, and they'd follow me all over the yard. One, Helen, would run a few steps ahead of me and sit down, blocking my path. This was her way of letting me know she wanted me to pick her up. She and the other two hens loved to be held and stroked.
The girls, as I called them, have all passed on, and we have not replaced them yet. How can we? I'm not convinced we will have any as wonderful as they.
Having said that, however, I know we will probably get chicks in the spring. We've been talking about it on and off for 2 years, and my husband is growing anxious for fresh eggs.
