I some times have grubs in mulch.I just spread it on a vacant piece of land.Birds come and eat them.Just keep an eye on them ,shoo them away when the feast is over.I make compost for my grape vine using dried blood.

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!

It's about time to discuss it! Especially since a lot of people don't understand it.

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Hi Patricia,
I leave off Providence Rd.
My yard is .85 acre. It would be the best little garden if we didn't live in a develpment with HOA, and it was not covered with pine trees, strangle weed, poyson ivy and backberries.
Little by little I will turn it into my dream garden.

Hi Patricia!
Thank you for inviting me to be your friend!
I'm going to have to allocate a whole other time slot to be able to play around here. Wonderful conversations, groups, etc.
I now see via your page that there is a vermiculture group and that you use shredded paper too.
We have a small shredder, PV electricity, that we use to recycle all of our personal paper. It makes great bedding for the worms, mulch for the garden and as an addition to the compost bins. I often use the shredded paper to create a buffer along the edges to prevent any effluent/liquid from our humanure additions from escaping. We also get big bags of shredded paper from offices in town. Good stuff!

Happy gardening! mamaka

My Rhododendron

I planted a Rhododendron this year. They like well drained acid soil, partially shaded, usually around pine trees. The area I choose had been covered in pinestraw for a long time and the soil didn't look very fertile. I turned the soil over then added lots of mulch before planting. I have been fore warned that it may not survive. I will keep this updated to let you know my success or failure.
I am going to try rooting a few cuttings just in case I fail on this. The best time to take cuttings is… Continue

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
