I think I lost my basil when we had the low temps Monday night. I knew I should have brought it in but I guess I was in denial. It looks droopy & leaves are yellowish. Beautiful day today!!!

Hi Nancy, I've just come from Glenn's photo and saw your comments about using them as cloches. I use plastic botles all the time, much the same as glenn, except I just cut a hole with my gardening knife. The bottles are also really good at preventing slugs and snails getting at the young seedlings.

Heat wave today, huh?!!!
Our snow banks have been halved and compacted by the rain. I am hoping to be able to get out and roam around a bit tomorrow. I'm getting cabin fever already!!
Now that we have Christmas done... I can focus on other things like seed catalogs!!
A friend of ours came for dinner and she said one section of MA that she drove thru looked like a bomb had gone off.... all the tree tops were snapped from the ice storm. I hear that there are still people in your state that have not got power back. That is awful!
Hope you had a wonderful day! I cooked several things that came from my garden such as onions and squash today... and it made me grateful!!!

I would assume you are getting about the same as we in terms of snowfall. I agree, it is nice to have a white Christmas... but this is really putting a dent in my preparations! I have never been so far behind!
Did you get any of the ice storm? We got hit really hard here in Southern Maine. We were out of power for almost 6 days. That put me way behind. I have not had time to make one single cookie!! I usually also make a gingerbread house that is quite elaborate.. but not this year! I have got as far as making the dough... so time to bake it. I spent yesterday moving snow instead!
My husband plans to retire this year. I work part time self employed. We have one son and no grandchildren yet.
We love recipes on this site... so if you have any you'd like to share?
What do you typically grow in your garden and how do you freeze or can?
My garden is quite large and I try to provide all I can for us for the winter.. just because I'm a bit of a rebel and an old farm girl!! :)
You can click on my tree and check out my photo's. I joined KGI too late in the season to actually have the best photo's of my main garden. But, you can see a bit of what I enjoy!

Hi shery, The reason farmer put thing in the cellar was it stayed 55-60 degrees year around & a dry cool mostly. The best thing is to store any veggies where air can circulate. One way is to build a 2"x4" frame with cross runner every 24", you can...

Bees and other creatures pollinate our crops. Birds and toads eat insect pests. Many animals play a helpful role in the vegetable garden. How can we make our garden friends feel at home?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!
