Turnip greens, collards, kale and mustard are all showing green through the snow. I am expecting them to bounce back tasty and bountiful. We are an hour south of Nashville, cold, snow and ice and just plain "wintery." Although I love it, I'm looki…

I am interested in communicating with folks in Tennessee...I love it there and would love to move there....getting a late start but if it ever works out, would love it!
In the late 60's I worked at Vanderbilt briefly and it was a great place to live!
We were there in Oct and will be returning in about 8-9 days.
Where are you ? I would like to have enough property to have a large garden, with veggies and flowers. My current yard is so small, it is overwhelmed just with flowers! I currently live in north Florida.

Hi,
The Loofahs grow like cucumber or squash vines, but they like a lot of sun and heat, which is sometimes difficult to find in Seattle. I have grown them on trellises. Ideally you let them dry out on the vine and when they are all brown and crumbly skinned you peel this off and shake out the seeds. I soak them in bleach water and several rinses and they are done. I use them in the shower like a wash cloth. They are much softer than the store bought kind. And this year I made soap and put pieces of them in the soap so it is a scrubbie soap. I found info online and they talked about them turning brown and dry on the vine, which mine never did, then found out those folks were in Texas. So I have to pick mine green usually and keep in a warm dry place, or they will rot and be no good (except my cat loves to play with them and tear them up) In TN you probably will have no problem with heat, except they can be finicky to get started from seed, so I usually plant twice as many. I have had some luck saving the seed and they grow the next year. They look like large cucumber seeds but they are black. I think I included one Pic of the loofahs when they are green and on the vine.

Yes, 2-1/2 from Nashville airport. Nashville friends say they have worse weather than Knoxville, though. I live in a very protected spot--about halfway down a hill, with lots of houses and trees around and the warmth of the urban environment. About to test that warmth tonight, I think!

Thanks for the invitation, Matthew. Wish you were closer than Jackson. I'll figure out how to join you online. I think the snails/slugs have eaten all my collard seedlings in the rain.

First I have to share with you that part of the national dish of Brazil is...collard greens! Here's the recipe:
Couve a mineira (Brazilian-style Collard Greens)
4-5 bunches of collard greens, washed, stems removed, rolled tightly and sliced into VERY thin strips with a sharp knife
1/2 T butter per cup of shredded collards
1 small onion and 2 cloves garlic, minced [optional]

Melt butter and add collard geens, Cook over high heat stirring constantly until collard greens just start to wilt. Add salt and serve.

Hi, Matthew -
I am not presently in Tennessee and if I were to stay, I'd have to devote all my time to trying to get local food networks going. To tell the truth, my region, the mountains, has not been an intelligent place at all. The fact is that I'm too old to throw any more years into this beautiful but value-impoverished region. If I stay it will be to spend time, garden, barter, etc with my elderly neighbors and some farther elders whose health is almost hopeless, as well as one pair of younger neighbors, and then I would let you know in case there are any kitchen gardeners near me. But farmers markets and an intelligent media, local government, and voters are very far behind the regions to which I think to go at present.

I need to upload some pics as well. My husband managed a trade and got a small greenhouse for me. I am going to try a vertical vegetable wall to grow container plants year round. Planning on a picture journal of the experience.
