Wow! those tomatoes look so good. We are just picking a couple of tomatoes each day so far. We planted late because we had a long heatwave in November. What are you going to do with this basket full, except eat them of course!

Hi Marian, I loved reading this post. Here in Aussie land we are making pickles, chutneys and freezing and drying our summer produce. Enjoy your day.

Our Kitchen Garden

We have just redesigned our veggie garden to make it easier to plant & pick our vegetables. All the bricks we used had been thrown out in a builder's skip. There are more photos of our garden on the Hills & Plains Seedsaver's blog. We live on the Adelaide plains so we have a milder climate than some of the folks who live in the hills. We specifically grow vegetables & herbs that we can use in all sorts of international recipes. This includes soups, salsas, fresh Indian chutneys, stir fries, Korean pickles, pestos, African & Mexican bean dishes, Indian dhals, Mediterranean casseroles, vegetable pies & muffins.
Our dogs eat a raw food diet & love pureed vegetables.
Our vegetable garden is truly international in flavour.
I hope you enjoy you garden as much as we do.

There always seems to be something to do when you have a kitchen garden..

I am sitting here on a warm dry summer's evening watching English gardening and cooking shows and listening to the fire works in the city after the Adelaide Tour Down Under bike race comes to an end.
I am reading about torrential rain in Northern Queensland and looking at snow on American gardeners sites.
River cottage has just appeared on the tele.
I have eggplants and zucchinis to make into chutneys, lemons to make 3 dog lemonade beer and dried herbs to bottle.
We had a delicious meal of garli… Continue

Hi Maggie
I hope you are well. The weather here is still very dull, damp misty and foggy. Just as you see it in old films. I had to get away last week to recharge my batteries. We spent a week in Spain, where the weather was glorious and spring like, with trees and flowers in blossom.
I think February for me is a month of preparation for the coming season. Mainly cleaning and tidying the winter mess. I spent Sunday cleaning out the greenhouse. Removing all the things that the frost had killed. I must make more effort next year to remove the tender items to a frost free place.
I usually start to sow tomatoes at the beginning of March. Any earlier and a cold spell will set them back, and they never seem to fully recover. I will probably sow some onions at the weekend. I have a lot of saved ornamental onion seed. These get a large purple ball on them. I am hoping to get sufficient plants to produce a large drift, which i think should look really nice.

Only weeds are growing in my garden, right now. We are having a cold winter. We had a huge snow storm last week. More snow than is common for this area. I do have a few radishes that sprouted in a cold frame, and I started my first flat of seedlings last week.

I imaging you are in that time where your garden is overflowing with tomatoes, cucumber, beans, etc...

Hi Maggie, it is locally grown. So it is the typical winter veggies with a few zuchinnis and eggplants coming in from Antalya. The larger supermarkets have things like pineapples and avocados that are grown in hotter areas. I like to stick with what is in season for the area, we are eating alot of oranges and mandarines the grapefruit here are lovely and are mainly the pink ones. Carrots are very cheap at the moment 3 kilos for 75 au cents. Cauliflower seems abundant as well. Fish here come in winter so we are eating a fair amount of fish as well. Hamsi, which are larger anchovies 3aud a kilo. Looking forward to all the stone fruits that will come in a couple of months.

Hi Maggie
Things are "singing"" here after a week of nice and much needed rain. Here in Western Sydney it has been just lovely, not too heavy but lots of good showers and so far a rainfall of 62mm which has soaked in and not flooded the gardens. . The tomatoes are finished but they were planted very late so at least we had a few to eat. This year is going to be very different and already the beet root, carrots and onions are looking just great. The potato bin has arrived and tomorrow will be put together and planted with Gem Squash seeds to see how they go, then come May I will buy seed potatoes and put them in - I was very spoilt and go too used to having tasty new potatoes at Christmas most of my life - I am afraid that the tinned ones just don't taste the same !!
I have to apologise for delays in communication but I work full time and after 8 hours a day in front of a computer I don't look at this one until Saturday.

H Maggie,
no, I dont like all that rain, and then there was a tree snake at work that just would not go away, so all in all the last two weeks have not been my favourite time of the year! Walking on the grasss meant sinking ankle deep in mud! BUT... things are looking up - the sun is out, the ground is drying out and my personal solar panels are charging (in my head - I believe the sun impregnates happiness into me!). I am just busy posting two blog posts, one about the dripping moisture and then another about all the stuff I am harvesting :) I will re-post that one on my blog here either today or tommorow. So things are definitly looking up :) How are things going down in Adelaide?

Hi Maggie
Thank you for making me feel welcome. I am to too sure what to say about my poor garden apart from thanks to the heat it is very unhappy again. I guess my biggest problem is I keep trying to grow the english type garden - coming from the deep south of NZ it is what I remember as a child and as a result feel I should still be able to grow the bulbs etc here. Another problem I have this year is no bugs of any sort, good or bad. I have even purchased good bug attractant to no avail. I even had to hand pollinate the tomatoes to get anything. Just recently I have seen 5 only lovely native bees but certainly no honey bees. I think maybe my husband and I will be buying some native bee hives from the western sydney uni later in Feb. Has anyone else in western sydney had this bug problem - the garden is chemical free which makes it even more puzzling.

Hi Joel,
here on the Adelaide plains we can veggie garden all year.
We have winter rain and very mild winters, no frost at all.
So we grow all the green things we can, we never have much luck with carrots but might try next winter.
We have a small garden compared to a lot of other gardeners but it is plenty for the 2 of us.
We actually pull out our summer garden and plant up our winter garden, but i am thinking maybe we should
rest the soil for a few week or grow a green crop, but we shall probably just add our compost and worm casting tea and plant up again.
I hope the weather warms up soon for you.

Hi Maggie,
It is cold here, we just had a 2 week cold snap o f 20F-14F (-12c to -18c). We have cold lower then 14F but it last a day or two, not 14 days!! I lost some of my turnips, most of my mustard, but my spinach is fine.
I lost my small cabbage, but the large heads are fine. I planted my winter garden late this year, we live, we learn. The collards are fine, I picked some for a friend today. How are your winters( I understand you are in summer now)? Do you
grow winter garden plants? Enjoy the summer warmth for me.

Hi Maggie,
we were lucky that it just fizzled out as it approached us. amazing! Now we are hoping for some dry weather - the ground is sodden! I have been trying to prune things back and open up the garden a bit to keep the bug population down. Let some light and air in! harvesting lots of passionfruit and pawpaw, not much else. I have just about had enough of this wet season now! happy Australia Day!

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…
