I cleaned out the chicken coop and added all the well used straw and all that great manure to a compost pile which I will keep covered as we are getting more rain and I want the worms to come up and enjoy the goodies and if its not covered it get to…

We had a great speaker deliver a talk on composting to our community garden members - she really fired up the crowd. It is very satisfying to see 40 people 'get it' suddenly. We got a HUGE delivery of Agromin's finest compost for our community gard…

We had our first compost workshop at my Santa Monica community garden last Sat. including all the compost we could lug into our gardens that was brought in and provided by the city, plus giveaway seeds and sprayers. The good news is that we'll be ha…

I just checked on my home potager & my tiny seedlings, which had just begun to peek out when they got hailed on. Twice! I think we all survived, tho.

Hi Mike...I ventured down to the garden this morning and was relieved to see everything okay. In fact, all of my seedlings look better than ever! I did have them protected somewhat with floating row covers and I think that helped. Thank's for your t…

Sharon, I am just up the coast in Ventura County, and we have had tornadoes, lightning, and torrential downpours. I measured 7" of rain in 3 days. That is half our annual average. I went down to our new community garden today and we are surviving…

With all this rain and wind it will be a miracle if my community garden plot in Santa Monica hasn't floated into the ocean!

LisaLu, I have been growing culinary ginger for a number of years in containers. I use a large nursery pot and fill it with a good potting mix such as Jungle Growth from Lowes. I bought a couple of pieces of ginger from the grocery store and planted it. Mine dies back in the winter as it is not frost hardy but you can dig it all winter. I dig only what I need each time. It is great to have it very fresh. I use mine in stir fries and in canned pear preserves. If you lose it you just buy more and start again. Mulch it over the winter with straw, hay or pine straw. Good Luck! Harry

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

Had no luck with gem squash last year - it was just too hot! So I didn't try this year. Maybe next summer.

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
