Eastern Iowa. Some of the Richest Soil in the World!
How long have you been growing food?
forever!
Dream garden travel destination:
I would love to travel to different cultures and see the differences and also the simularities in the way we grow our gardens. How each individual overcomes the adversities in their garden.
Favorite foods:
Tomatoes and oregano make it Italian; wine and tarragon make it French. Sour cream makes it Russian; lemon and cinnamon make it Greek. Soy sauce makes it Chinese; garlic makes it good.
I have the tomato plants i started too early; they are a foot tall now, and a small group of some that are 3 inches, which will probably be the most reasonable, prolific when I set them out in 3 or more weeks. Will keep a cover handy for too cool nights. I have peas up. You?
By not starting your tomatoes yet, you are being wise. I, however, am not wise, but needed the greenery to keep from going nuts at the end of winter . . .
I have spinach that reseeded itself last fall and has been growing under the snow all winter. I plan on harvesting some in a few days. I've never had that happen before. I planted a few snowpeas, snappeas and shell peas, but I need to get more in the ground. The wind makes it very uncomfortable to be outdoors, but I did manage a walk around the block this afternoon. Gotta keep the joints oiled :-)
Kyle, how are your tomato starts doing now? My first group of starts look great. I hope the weather shapes up at a decent time so I can plant them outside. We keep getting snowstorms.
Question: I usually start a few leeks indoors to extend their season. They get really leggy and fall over. Can I trim them back to encourage the root growth? Will it affect the finished plant? How about onions from seed? Can I trim them?
It's a beautiful blossom. I hope mine comes back this year. What's the weather like in Ioway? Here in Idahow the wind blows and blows, for days now. It's a warm wind and has melted most of the snow.
photo of your hibiscus makes me sad because mine started to grow about the time it got completely inundated with weeds and i didn't notice. 2008 was not my best caretaking year. but i am hoping to be stronger this year and get some serious weeding and mulching done.
we'll see how it goes. even with my neglect, however, i end up with food.
Sorry to hear how your area was affected by the floods. There's no place 'safe' -- we just have to adjust to what the earth deals us, migrate or die, as they say. I ordered seeds earlier this week. Gardening is a symbol of hope, don't you think? Every year is different; climate, weather patterns, etc., aren't constant. I don't understand why we believe they should be . . . I'm off to the piano to play those old Christmas songs. I play nearly every morning for a while. Playing keeps me rooted. Shalom.
Wonderful clothes line photo. And is that pasta ready for cutting into strips? I haven't looked at your page for a while. Lots of good stuff. Looks like you had a great garden this year.
Thanks for your comment on my photo. The dog in the picture was a badly abused rescue dog, so I love to see her enjoying life like that. Your photos are beautiful.
Maria, I have this in my corral in one part of it, and the lunatic alpaca that is where the bindweed is (I have to keep him separate) won't eat it. I'm pretty sure that yours looks like the same leaves I have on my plant. It's definitely a western...
and a lot of other people about the White House Lawn. Here was the original article. And it had me alarmed. The Mother Jones article this derived from though is exceedingly misleading.
This is very upsetting to me, and I'm disgusted with them.

Winter squash varieties take, on average, 90 days to mature. Harvest winter squash when the "ground spot" changes from white to a cream or gold color. Check before harvesting to see that all winter squashes and pumpkins to be stored have hard rind...
Joy,
I would expect a more discerning read from you - did they publish a soil analysis for you to read (no), did they use expremist language(yes), does the writer have an agenda (yes). Is there more to "biosolids" than "sludge" (yes), could go on...
Chris! You don't need chemicals! I tell you the coffee grounds work WONDERFULLY. Slugs are repelled by the caffeine in the grounds, it's toxic to them. And it's a slow release nitrogen. :) It's working great for me, it saved my basil and bean plants.
I agree with Joy, slugs can demolish basil over night (learned the hard way). I generally don't find the need to use chemicals in my yard, but I would make the exception for slugs! Their eggs can lie dormant in the soil for years, and can emerge i...
Angie and Glenn: Thanks for the replies. I bought my bare root canes each year from Nourse Farms. When the first crop failed I knew that I shouldn't plant the replacement crop in the same place, but I took the gamble. I did mulch the row each year...
I'd always worry about whether or not things are edible, birds can eat things we can't so I wouldn't assume anything. I personally don't know about things being unedible but I do only eat what I know has been certified as safe. This is a good ques...
Don't eat any vegetable for at least a week. (The container should have instructions about this) It's probably too late to do anything, you could try to water the veggies to try and dilute the solution but I don't think that will work well. Good l...
I'd recommend asking people who grow in your area when to water. I water at night - but I live in a high altitude desert region - usually mildew is not an issue. Your area is probably more humid and mildew issues might be more of a problem. I thin...
I personally throw all invasive plants into the trash. For a plant to be invasive in this area it has to be especially tough - I carefully pulled every bit I found for about three years. This probably isn't bindweed because you haven't mentioned t...
This is my first year to try to keep it over !! But I harvest mine when they go a little creamy colored !! Then I put them in the shade to cure a little !! I am going to try to keep a few for winter but I really think that it would be better to pl...
