I would like this group to focus on kitchen herb gardens, be they culinary or medicinal. What do you grow, what do you use it for, do you make any medicinal products from your herbs?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!

Well I haven't posted for a while but i have a lot to tell you. For a first time garden I think it's going pretty good. Western MT has had ALOT of rain this spring, more wet days than not - which is ok, less forest fires! But the garden looks like...

This is so silly. I just realized we have this KITCHEN Gardeners International group and we have no category with the things we DO with this food, how we cook! So here we are with a Recipe Exchange.

Did you read the back of the seed packets - some say to plant as soon as the soil is workable. Penelope is more experienced than me but some plants can take light freezing. Our last frost date is mid to late May. I have carrots from last year grow...

Hi Joy, thanks for the info, I didn't realize that I could put anything in the ground before the last frost. Today it is snowing, and about 33°. Our last frost is usually late May. We have had snow even late in June, but that is rare. My garden is...

I'm going to try "wall o waters" this year, and the back of the package says to put them up about 8 weeks before the last frost. (They go up for a week filled with water but no seedlings, then the seedlings are planted on the second week.) I was wondering if you had considered using (or had used) wall o waters. Supposedly they really expand the growing season - I've seen people use them and they swear by them. I hope to put some up tomorrow and then (if lucky) plant in them the next week.

I have a jungle!!!

Well I haven't posted for a while but i have a lot to tell you. For a first time garden I think it's going pretty good. Western MT has had ALOT of rain this spring, more wet days than not - which is ok, less forest fires! But the garden looks like a jungle, the mosquitos are so thick that I am having a hard time getting the weeds pulled. On the plus side everything is growing better than I expected. For the last week or two, when I could fight of the bugs, I have had radishes, spinach and lettuc… Continue

An inch+ of snow!!!!

Yesterday I woke to over an inch of snow on the ground. I had been planning to get potatoes started in but now I will need to wait for a few days. At least it didn't last to long and hopefully it will help get more moisture into the ground for later this year. Thank you all for the input, I have been reading up on the crops that Joy mentioned. If all goes well in my life and the worlds align just right I may get into the garden this weekend.

Starting a Garden

Last fall I decided to start a garden. I can't wait for warm weather to get started on this new adventure. Today I started tomatoes, peppers and a couple of other things in doors. I have recruted a very good friend to work on the garden with me. I figure that it will be a lot more fun (and seem like less work) if there is someone to help with it.
One reason that I want to garden is to reduce the cost of groceries for my family. I hope to grow enough food to put up some for next winter. Wish me l… Continue

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
