Gillian, I thought the pigeon pea was a kind of tree thing and people only grew it for nitrogen fix in thier gardens or for animal feed. Can you use them the same way you would a normal legume.

Great idea, when my boys were little I converted thier plastic turtle sandbox into a container and we grew only green veggies lol that is what I said to get them in. What about the purple basil which is prolific and nice plus I have seen and bought…

Edible Weeds

This plant is widely eaten here, you can find it nearly everywhere as a weed and you can also buy it at the local markets. It is used in a soup with lentils, onions and tomatoes. I am not overly keen on it but alot are. I believe this is a Mallow plant, correct me if Im wrong as I want to know the englis… Continue

Pickles

Kathryn, I read your post in Preserving the Harvest. I wonder if you might post and share your pickling recipe in a blog or somewhere. I pickled a lot of veggies last fall, but they are all too salty. Would like to compare and perhaps try your recipe this year. Thank you.

During this time of year most people here are busy pickling. Carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, chilies, large radishes and other veggies are in and waiting to be pickled. Last month I made a couple of kilos of carrot sticks and a… Continue

Organic Baby Food

My baby is 8months old and I have just started giving her solids. I wanted to hold her off for a couple more months but she is just to keen. She sees her brother eating and it is just to much for her to handle. If you go through the supermarkets in the baby section there are a variety of premade baby foods and cereals. There is also a good selection of Organic brands from juices to purees. I dont like buying premade baby food as I really dont know whats in it and they still have preservatives so… Continue

Helva

Yesterday I had to make a batch of helva for my husband. He is quite particular about his food and he only likes Turkish food which is fine if you are Turkish as you have seen your mothers, aunts etc making all the dishes but for someone who isnt it can be quite daunting. This is an easy desert but slightly time consuming. This is the basic recipe except for the peanuts. You can add in any nut like walnuts or hazelnuts. I have seen recipes that have coconut and sesame seeds and also rose water.… Continue

Omg! You live in Konyea?near to the tomb of Roomi?I am an apt lover of his work and idealogy, and you know the basis of our country's ideology are drawn from that of Sheikh of Koneya.May be one day you will find me standing in front of your door, while on a trip to see His grave.
I have almost learned his Masnawi, that is more than three books.each volume reaching more or less 1500 pages.I am growing them for fruit and vinegar,as the white vinegar is synthetic so i want my own vinegar. They make it with sugercane juice also, but i don't like the taste. As i told we are from an arab origin so have passed through Turkey hundereds of years ago before settling in here.what a coincident.

I don't have specific plans to move, am just restless and my job is being threatened with state cutbacks in education. I can't decide if owning my little house is a burden or a blessing. Your inventiveness in packing up your garden was/is wonderful. I'm glad it worked well. I've been having problems with my back too. I hope it's better by spring so I can get my garden in order. Melancholy winter days . . .

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.
