I really miss mangoes. We had a huge tree of the stringy ones and there were several around in yards and the park next door. I picked these off the ground and made chutney.

That is so true. Of all the things everyone carries around with them in life it is the hurts and the blessings we remember the most. I try to not hurt anyone intentionally and if I do accidentally I say sorry and I also try and be a blessing.

Olives

Have been to the Bazar and bought several kilos of Olives. The ones they sell are green, havent seen any black at the local bazars. I came home and cut into all the olives and have started the leaching. In about a months time I should have some olives ready for the table.

I took a knife and cut 2 vertical cuts into each one, then using several containers added water. You then change the water every day for about a month until all the bitterness has left. Then you use a brine solution. It is ver… Continue

İf you have been blessed with an abundance of produce you may want to think about something a little differerent. These are great and easy to make.

Green Beans

Green Beans are in. İ like them straight off the vine best but this recipe is great. İ will post 2 recipes - same recipe but with a twist.

Green Beans 1

1 kilo beans topped, tailed and chopped into halves or quaters
2 onions, finely diced

salt and pepper to taste
chilli if so desired

Saute the onion in a little oil, add in the beans and saute until the colour changes. then add in the tomato paste etc. Add enough water to cover the beans and cook on… Continue

Summer Bounty

Here is the time for stone fruits, the cherries have past but we have saved all the stems for winter use. Apricots and peaches have come in so will be making jam soon. İ am waiting for all the little gerkins and small green chillies so İ can pickle those for winter. The herb prices are at a low at the moment so İ intend on buying quite a few to dry(one kilo of parsley is1 lira, very cheap and about the same as the Australian dollar)

İ had lunch at a restaurant today, lamachun(flat bread with a… Continue

Asure or Noahs Pudding

Asure day is coming up in Turkey, it is a food that is made and eaten over a couple of days. Usually people will make it and give some to thier neighbours. Over the last few years İ have been lucky enough to sample quite a few bowls. There is a main recipe people seem to follow but within that alot of variations, even minor changes can change the whole taste.

İt is said this food was made first by Noah, after he came to ground as he looked at his stores and what was left he mixed in a pot and m… Continue

Hi, we had a bit of snow, but it melted and now we have pleasant sunny afternoons, but below freezing temperatures at night and in the morning. It's 21F right now. I've been weaving and sewing little bags. Once I get all my papers graded, which should be before the week is out, I'll take some photos and put them on my web page:
www.waitingforodysseusweavings.com I added a few things to the page a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting ready for our Christmas sale.

How is your new place? Are you enjoying it? Any new recipes? My friend Jonathan made a curry last night, a bit too hot for me, but the flavor was good. I made crab cakes from canned crab which were pretty good with the lime flavored sauce.

I haven't posted anything up there yet, but I need to! We just bottled the Rhubarb wine and it turned out really well. It is quite sweet, but has a very rhubarby scent. Definitely a dessert wine :)

The cherry, blackberry and concord grape are still in progress. The cherry wine tastes surprisingly similar (to me, at least) to a merlot, and the blackberry is strong but sweet. I haven't tasted the grape in a little while, but last time I did it was incredibly potent. ;)

Yes, it's very cold, Kathryn. I expected a light frost (32) but it was 20! So nothing I covered in the garden survived. What is frustrating is that it will warm after this, but to no avail for the dead plants. Oh well, I have preserved a lot and the rest is compost. How is it for you?

Pomegranates and Figs. How luxurious! I have apples and grapes -- made pie and apple crisp. Grapes didn't do so well this year, but we've been eating some of them. I will harvest my beets and carrrots this afternoon and put them in bags and store them in the fridge. I don't have very many. I think I'll make a few green tomato pickles for Jonathan, who seems to be working out ok this past month. He's easy to have around, as is his black cat named Prozac :-)

How's the weather in Turkey? It's at freezing here. I picked my tomatoes last night, brought in my potted herbs and cut the basil. I'll make pesto after work today and put it in the freezer.

Thank you so much for the recipes. The pictures are just gorgeous. Harvest is such a marvelous time. Though I can't say I'm terribly sorry it will freeze tonight for the first time. I'm getting a wee bit weary.

Hi Kathryn,
So you originally come from Australia and married someone from Turkey? My hubby and I both come from South Africa, and eventually met again and got married four years ago. I spent most of my time sailing around the world - never got to the med though - so have lived in a lot of different countries. Funny that I miss certain things about each of those. Most importantly though I miss the friends and family scattered all over the world! thank heaven for internet!
We live alongside a creek and have a huge assortment of birds and butterflies -I do love that! A community of kookaburras live in a tree at the creek and every night we watch them calling each other back to the tree!
