Salt treated wood contains arsenic, so is not a good choice...our water has much higher than normal arsenic levels from sawdust resulting from our recent construction boom....not good

Personally I would not cut toe bottom of the pot off, the roots will grow into the ground and then be ripped up when you moved the tree-not good for the plant!

I like them in veggie pasta dishes-drain the oil (it's great for sauteing onions, garlic, etc) cut them into bite sized pieces and saute with anything-squash, beans, greens, onions-whatever you have. Yummy!

Does anyone grown prarie sage in their garden? It is what I always used for smudging when I lived out west, but it seems white sage is all you can buy here in the east.

I don't have corn, but I do use fish carcases whenever I have them. I bury them about 1- 1.5 feet down and cover them well with leaves before I re-bury the hole with the soil. I have dogs, cats racoons and opossum and have never had a problem with...

Hi Kate. Welcome to KGI. Hey, I'm from NC, living in Georgia now. Been to the Outer Banks several times. This is a really great place for gardeners to gather and share their interest and passion for gardening with each other. Can't wait to see pics of your garden and read about what you're doing. Please leave lots of comments, on photos, blogs, discussions and other members' pages. I always tell folks, that's the way we get to know each other and make friends, 'cause everyone loves reading the comments everybody else leaves everywhere.

Have fun, and best gardening wishes!

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
