Profile

Where do you live and garden?
South West France
How long have you been growing food?
4-10 years
About Me:
I moved to south west France about 4 years ago to a property with a large garden. There was a lot of building work to do so gardening took a back seat until this summer (2008), all I did was mow the extensive park and try and prune the fruit trees and pick and use any fruit they produced. Plums and cherries were particularly successful.
This year I have taken a small plot and am making a "potager". I've just started so I'm not too sure what I'll grow yet but I am hoping for quite a selection, albeit in a small space. If it goes ok then next year I plan to double the size to about 16 square metres (20 square yards). I think that is still small but it is only a vegetable garden (potager) as I do have an orchard with about 20 fruit trees.
Dream garden travel destination:
I'm wondering about Japan?
Favorite foods:
In France you don't have "favourite foods". All food is treated with reverence and meals aren't made they are constructed. For me , I really like duck in it's various forms - foie gras, confit de canard, duck with pineapple and ginger sauce. I also love homemade bread, homemade chutney and homemade jams and any fresh vegetables.

My Friend Bernard

I visited my friend Bernard the other day and was forced to try a couple of his wines.

The first was his 2007 AOC Bergerac Rosé. Of course, this wine was still very young at only a few months old but rosé is best drunk young. This one was a very

FOOD GROWING BLOGGERS GET TOGETHERS

Some weeks ago the idea of a kind of international food growing bloggers get together was mooted. It was a kinda fun thing that grew out of various conversations by some blog writers, Patrick in Amsterdam, Kate in Adelaide and myself Well things have been quietly going on in the backstreets of the towns and countries around the world and I’m pleased to report that there are now Food Growing Bloggers Get Togethers planned for the next few years. They kick off this year with events on August 24.… Continue

Reflections on times past

I used to sit in a pub with a few friends and the conversation would eventually get around to gardening. At the time I was probably the only one out of the five or six of us who regularly met who didn’t grow food. You know the reasons, I was too busy, I worked long hours, I had a large garden which already took a lot of maintenance. So there we were, usually in a real ale pub, five fairly conscientious veggie growers and me. Every so often someone would claim they had grown the biggest potato,… Continue

Reflections on my garden

This is my first year growing vegetables and I’m discovering I’m not very good at it. I’m especially, not very good at raising seedlings. I sow tiny little seeds that I can hardly see and usually, for me, not a lot happens! The surface of whatever container I have used seems to get a bit disturbed but that’s all. After several months of this I have only just realised that the problem is mice eating the seeds and the new growth! I’m not very good with trees either. I planted some cypress to form… Continue

Who'd be a tomato?

I can tell spring has arrived! My workshop, normally the bastion of wood and metal bashing operations has suddenly taken on a fine green shimmer as boxes of seedlings sit in the window gaining the sunlight but avoiding the late frosts that still catch me out every year. This year, tomatoes and some geraniums fell victim to a late unexpected and unannounced frost. My normally reliable weather forecast showed an overnight temperature of 4C(about 40F) but in the morning the thermometer showed -2C (… Continue

Early I saw a comment from a teacher who mentioned using Indian corn to make cornbread. For some reason, after signing in, I cannot find the same place. Anyway -here is New Mexico we use blue corn to make cornbread and tortillas. It is a local staple and it has a wonderful flavor. My kids always called blue corn bread "smurf bread".

On another note : DId you know that August 8th is National Zucchini day and August 25th is National Zucchini Bread Day.

Notes,
Dear Ian,
I guess it could be a useful feature, but I'm not sure, how we would use it when we have forums and blogs and my pages.
If you could clarify, I'll put my thinking cap on.

Hi, Ian,
I just got back from a long vacation in Seattle, Washington, where I drank some lovely wines that made me think of you. I've always loved Rhones, and Washington state is producing a lot of wines in that style, using largely the Syrah grape but also doing interesting things with mouvedre and the Spanish tempranillo. It was a great trip. What's on your agenda these days, and how ae the plans for the get-together coming along?

Hi Ian

We always have something going from September through November, and yes, planning ahead and announcing your plans early is a very good practice.

I'm sure you have hear the saying...you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I'm confident things will come together for the best.

Happy weekend~

Ian,
Thanks for you response. I bought my first batch of veggies starts yesterday and it rained all day today. I will probably get them in the ground tomorrow. I want the more unusual things - leeks, endive, and such (not unusual for France, I'm sure). If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. I
