Hi everyone, get much snow or ice this week? You could use 1/4" wire mesh around the 2x12, just tac it to the outside 12" - 18" high. Cut out a section, then wire it back in place, so you can get to your crops. This should stop all snakes & small an…

Hi Melissa, It maybe to late to save the RM, but we learn by doing. You could put the pot in a larger pot, then fill the plant pot with luke warm water(cold water shocks plants) untill it runs over into the larger pot. Let the plant sit & soak up th…

N&K, David, thank you. Purple Basil is a pretty & useful plant. I love Aloe, but I need seeds that will grow to at least 3" in 6-8 weeks. I do not know where to get seeds or small aloe vera.

Aloe vera was the most requested herb when my class grew plants as gifts for parents. It transplants easily, and makes a pretty and useful herb for the home. I had and still have, about 25 years, a sizeable stand of adapted plants on the south side…

Hi maggie, I saw these in a seeds catalog, the side note said the house wife did not have to bend over to pick the beans. I was not sold on them, but after this WOW of a picture! I may rethink my frist inpression.

Nostalgic Garden Memories

I pulled weed & picked beans so young that I do not remember a time when I was not in the garden. I carried weeds to the end of the row to compost. My father would not let me use a hoe untill I was older. He did not want me to hoe up the beans. When I was eight years old, I learned to hoe the garden. My father made me wear shoes in the garden, so I would not cut my toes.We went bare foot from spring till fall on the farm. After my frirst day hoing, my father took me to the nearest country st… Continue

Thank you for the kind words Joel. Another KGI friend has been encouraging me to come back, and I am, though slowly. I've been following some of your discussions and gardening progress with great interest. I have to say, it is good to be chatting with gardening friends again!
I want to believe we will have another successful gardening year, but it was so good last year, I'm little afraid we can't match it. But we'll see. When I froze my sweet peppers and banana peppers, I just chopped them to the size I knew I would use and put them in snack-size zip lock bags. I put 2 cups per baggie because I knew I would always use at least that much. I've been using them in soups, sauces, and casseroles with great success. I pre-froze (on cookie sheets) fruits like strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and cantaloupe balls.
I've been thinking I should get my seed-starting going, but I'm also thinking that I just don't have the right light for it indoors. And the greenhouse is too far away from the house in this cold and rain! Hmmmm, my mind is ticking away on a couple of ideas. Maybe I should go work on them and I'll be able to start seeds! Talk to you again soon! m

Hi Joel
Sorry for delay in replying - I work full time - 8 hours a day - so my home computer is neglected until the weekends. We have a tropical fish / reef saltwater tank so have been out this morning to buy some fish to replace some which had died over the last couple of weeks.
I and the gardens are all "singing" here as we have had a week of lovely rain, not too heavy but constant and it is still very warm so everything is growing like topsy., I have bought a potato planter so hubbie is going to put it together for me later on and I intend to put some Gem Squash seeds in to see how they grow, then come May I will buy some seed potatoes and we will see how it goes. I now have planters for most veges as our clay makes it too difficult for do a decent garden and although I was rather late doing the tomatoes at least we had a few to eat - this year will be better.

Hi Joel
Thank you. Feel a bit guilty saying how long I have been growing food - I should have said TRIED to grow food. Now into raised gardens and hoping they will work better than my previous dismal failures. At least have had some tomatoes this season even if I had to had pollinate and now looking at a growing Gem Squash followed by potatoes for Christmas. Does anyone is Western Sydney know how to grow Gem Squash successfully in this climate - I have plenty of seed and somewhere to put them so just a little bit of advice would be appreciated.

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…
