Yeah, they're beetle grubs. I have them in my compost too, I think ours are June Bug grubs. They don't seem to do any harm, and there's so many of them you'd never get 'em all.

Hi Jess, I am so careful about mosquitoes here as some of them carry very nasty diseases. I make seaweed tea by leaving the mixture to sit fermenting for a couple of weeks. I make it in a bucket with a tight fitting lid and have never had mosquito...

I think as soon as you pour the liquid on the garden any larvae will die as they need water to live. Their decaying bodies will add further small amounts of nourishment to the plants. I wouldn't worry. I once read that adding a small amount of veg...

Try Violets

With this time of year comes a large amount of time spent in our gardens. But this is also the time to begin gathering wild greens---from God's garden. I have started foraging and have been enjoying all that I find.

Does anybody have a patch somewhere on your property that looks like this?

Hi Jess, Are you the person who ask about grubs in the compost, I read it, but old age and all, I am not sure where. Any ways the grub looks like a Japanese beetle, but is a green fruit beetles.

Hey Jess, hope all is well with you. Did you do anything special to your bee-balm the first year to get them through the winter? Mine are about 8 in tall now. Oh yeah, Proverbs is one of my favs. Have a good one.

Hi Jess! I enjoyed looking at the new photos and that great harvest! Whatever do you do with pattipan squash? Winter squash varieties seem to have such limited use. Most recipes are sweet, and I would prefer savory. I also visited your dixiefarmgirl blog to catch up and saw that crazy squash duck! Loved it! I like the Barefoot Herbalist too! I'm out to learn more about herbs this year myself, since I'm growing 21 different kinds! The first thing I need to discover is which ones will winter over! I'll be harvesting and drying many of the herbs soon.

Did you ever get a chance to find the book I recommended, Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel? You'd think I have a financial stake in it the way I push that book. But it is a series of 5 books, growing to 6 or 7 in the next year, centered on a tiny little girl that grows up in prehistoric times. It's not only a beautiful story, it includes the author's painstaking and detailed research into the culinary and medicinal properties of a huge number of plants. It's an enormous wealth of knowledge that I refer back to repeatedly. I'm sure you'd love the series if you read it, for the story and for the factual information. The author even gives detailed descriptions of how to make natural shelters and simple weapons. You could probably find paperback copies in used book stores. That's how I found them almost 20 years ago. Okay, that's enough I guess, but if I had to run for the hills to survive, I'd take these books with me!

How are your chickens doing? Any eggs yet? Ours are getting big. They're about 4 months old now. I might have eggs as early as mid-late July. Then again, maybe not until October. Not sure. I'm ready for my own eggs, but I'm not hanging around the chicken pen with a catcher's mit yet.

Congrats again on the garden bounty! I've been getting lots of squash, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes. Already canned 9 half-pints of banana peppers. I've got so much squash I'm going to take a load to FISH today. Oh, and 4 baby pumpkin and 6 watermelon! I'm also growing spaghetti squash, acorn, and butternut, but I planted them late, so no fruit yet. I go to the garden at sunup (6 am) every day and get done before 8 am so I can avoid the heat! Can't wait for the tomatoes to come in big time so I can start processing them for freezing, sauces, and more!
God bless the work of your hands Jess! And God bless you!

More photos! I love it. Everything looks great. I'll bet you're so proud. Do you have any babies yet? Baby squash, baby cukes, baby beans? I harvested my first tomatoes today - A couple handfuls of Sweet 100s. Lots of peppers, some ready to pick, and baby squash and cukes looking promising. It won't be long and we'll all be up to our knees in veggies! How exciting!

I was buying herbs a few weeks ago and sampled some pineapple mint. It was wonderful, but I passed it over in favor of ginger mint. Haven't used any yet, but plan to. Many of my herbs need to be cut back. That's okay, I can dry what I take and begin storing them.

Keep up the good work Jess! You're really something!

Hi Jess, just thought I'd stop in and check on you. Those beans are really growing! And those squash look great. Mine don't look like that yet, but they're getting there. We're finally getting strawberries. Just one or two at a time, but that's nice. Occasionally, one will have gone soft before I find it. No problem, some lucky chicken will enjoy it.

I wanted to let you know about "Anh Collins" comment below. Sometimes this site gets spammed by people promoting their own products or websites. Much more rarely, it is something pornographic. I try to help Ian spot stuff like this so he can handle it before it becomes a problem. This time, I saw "her" early Sunday morning (I was going to leave you a note then, before we went to church). Before I could get a note off to Ian, she sent this message to everyone on the site. Once Ian knew, he dealt with it swiftly. This is the first time it went this far across the membership before being stopped. But these folks were fast about it. I'm sorry you had to experience this, and I hope it doesn't diminish your opinion of this great site.

Looking forward to the next update on how your garden is doing. I'm sure you're busy working in it most days. Stay in touch!
