Hi Angela, you might want to start with cold frames before you graduate to greenhouses. Great way to extend your season and have a covered seeding area. Simple to build or put together too! They can be as elaborate as you like, and as simple too - f…

Hi Glenn, have you tried paving stones, brick, or dark-coloured rocks yet? i find they used to work the best, and be a little less passive than the water bottles. You will need a lot of water bottles to make a significant difference in a greenhouse,…

Well, the "Lupini beans" I bought at the store turn out to be European white lupins, or Lupinus albus. So, anyone have any ideas about how to cook it? Recipes from the Mediterranean?

I bet it would be nice in a risotto too. I would probably add salt to make it a bit more briney.

What a beautiful plant! Is the Carolina lupin the same one that produces the white lupin beans? "Lupini beans" is what they are called on the package I bought. Can anyone enlighten me on what to do with them in the kitchen? I am a self-confessed com…

now to try bean leaves - really nice green to use if you haven't got chard or spinach. My Chinese friends introduced me to this. you just have to take out the ribs of the leaf and use the soft green parts. yes, a little bit of work, but really worth…

Hi Jeff
Thanks for the greenhouse tips. I never thought about dye in the water, but its obvious when you think about it.
My greenhouse has a concrete perimeter, so i think i will paint that matt black so it will absorb more heat. I imagine that rocks will heat up faster but also cool down faster than water.
We were in Vancouver last year for my sons wedding, but never managed to get to the island due to other commitments. I sorted the ferries out and everything, but it just didn,t happen. We hope to get there one day.

Thanks again & happy gardening

Had no luck with gem squash last year - it was just too hot! So I didn't try this year. Maybe next summer.

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…

yes - the pods are quite tough. We only ate the peas inside and we always ate them green although many Indian people dry them. They are known as toovar dhal in Gujerati or tuvaram in Tamil and there are lots of recipes for them dried. Just google to…

Mary, so you always shell them? I am entirely in the dark with these, and no more flowers :(... Did you only cook the peas fresh or did you leave some to dry? I posted a photo of the HUGE luffa I found, and there are lots more making an appearance -…

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
