Happy Winter!

I love the young kale leaves in salads along with beet leaves. During the winter months I love freezing the kale leaves then adding them to my soups 15 minutes before serving. Everett these are healthy looking beet leaves. I grew the bull's blood ...

I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...

HI everyone, Thanks Everett, I will have to try your Bulls Blood. Hi Tamra, I never eaten kale , can I use it raw in salad or should I always cook it? Beets & Kale are two veggies I have not grown as of yet.

I have noticed that my purple kale is only purple when the weather is cold, just like your red beets.

Hi Jared
I own some land which I will be moving to in a couple of months. I have started some vegetable plants and have been looking into different ways of space saving and such. I will trellis cucumbers and hopefully if I can lay my hands on some genuine SA gem squash seed, I will try them too. I have had success with them here before, but have no more seed. If you have any idea where I can get them please let me know.
thanks
Pippa

Yep, some snow, a lot of ice, mostly dealing with the windchill up here on the Cumberland Plateau / Crossville. I'm putting a brick / sand floor down in my greenhouse, gonna try vertical growing, stacking pots and stuff. My greenhouse is only 6ft. x 10ft. Picked up container vegetable seeds from Burpee Seed and Gurneys, very high yield plants. Planted them in the bed garden to see how they would produce and if they had the flavors we liked, very pleased with the results! Planning on taking a lot of pictures!

hey Jared. That's what I'm hearing. My gardening friends from Twitter are raving about all the great snow. It completely missed us! I flew in last night and Greensboro was getting it but it died before I got to Mount Airy. Once again, we missed out. Hope you are well and enjoying this very special day.
Thanks for checking in.

I love the greenhouse in the snow! Is this in Tennessee where you used to live? And just look at that beautiful big field in the background.

I planted caribe in the spring, then saved the tiny ones from the harvest and replanted those in the fall. I have read that you should not save your own potato seed b/c it can spread disease, but since my potatoes looked healthy, I took the risk. I plan on buying more certified seed in the spring and planting them on the opposite side of the garden just in case. Here is a link to a photo of the spuds, they were beautiful.

This nice thing about containers is you can move them in when the weather gets really really bad. I do this with a bay tree, it only comes in on really cold nights.

Do you have a community garden near buy where you can rent a plot? I did this one year. However it was really hard for me to not be able to visit my plants several times a day.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
